HBO confirms release window for the highly anticipated prequel exploring the adventures of Dunk and Egg, set nearly a century before the original series.
A New Chapter Begins in Westeros
The wait is almost over. HBO has officially announced that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a Game of Thrones spinoff based on George R. R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg, will premiere in January 2026 on HBO Max.
The confirmation came from Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content, during a conversation with Variety. This six-episode series will expand the Game of Thrones universe once again—this time, by delving into the lives of two lesser-known but beloved characters.
A Prequel Set 90 Years Before ‘Game of Thrones’
The story takes place roughly 90 to 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, during the height of Targaryen rule over the Seven Kingdoms.
- Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk): A humble yet brave knight with a strong moral compass.
- Egg (Aegon V Targaryen): A young squire who eventually becomes king.
This unlikely duo embarks on adventures through a more politically stable—but no less dangerous—Westeros, where legends are born and loyalty is tested.
George R. R. Martin Praises the Adaptation
George R. R. Martin, author of the original novellas, has expressed excitement about the project. In a blog post from January, he wrote:
“I’ve seen all six episodes now (the last two in rough cuts, admittedly), and I loved them. Dunk and Egg have always been favorites of mine, and the actors we found to portray them are just incredible.”
Martin also teased the introduction of fan-favorite characters such as the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall.
Meet the Cast: New Faces in Westeros
The lead roles have been officially cast:
- Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall, the chivalrous knight
- Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg, the sharp-minded and secretive squire
In June 2024, HBO gave fans their first glimpse of the show, followed by a teaser that revealed both new characters and familiar faces from the Game of Thrones franchise. The casting choices and visuals have already sparked excitement across fan communities.
Official Synopsis Sets the Tone
According to HBO’s official synopsis:
“A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
The tone promises a blend of adventure, heart, and political intrigue, offering something both newcomers and longtime fans can appreciate.
What to Expect from the Series
- A tighter, character-focused narrative spanning six episodes
- Classic Westerosi politics, though with a slightly lighter tone than Game of Thrones
- Intriguing new settings and deep lore tied to Targaryen history
- Possible connections to other prequels like House of the Dragon
The limited episode count suggests a streamlined and faithful adaptation, avoiding the narrative sprawl of later Game of Thrones seasons.
