Global Carbon Emissions on Track to Exceed 1.5°C Limit Within 3 Years, Study Reveals

Earth to Exhaust Carbon Budget for 1.5°C Limit in Just 3 Years, Warn Scientists

Scientists warn that if current CO2 emissions continue, the world will exceed its carbon budget for limiting global warming to 1.5°C within the next three years.

According to a recent study by an international group of scientists, if the world maintains its current rate of carbon dioxide emissions, the carbon budget for limiting global warming to 1.5°C will be exhausted in just over three years. This budget represents the total amount of CO2 the planet can emit while still having a reasonable chance of staying below the critical temperature threshold, agreed upon by countries at the 2015 Paris climate conference.

The study, published in the journal Earth System Science Data, found that 53 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) are released into the atmosphere every year due to human activities, primarily fossil fuel burning and deforestation.

  • Carbon Emissions: Around 53 billion tonnes of CO2e are emitted annually due to human activities.
  • Impact of Emissions: These emissions are rapidly depleting the carbon budget required to limit global warming.

The study also noted that while exceeding the carbon budget doesn’t mean the 1.5°C limit will be breached immediately, the world is on course to exceed it soon unless significant emissions cuts are implemented.

Global Warming and Human Activities

The study reveals that from 2015 to 2024, the Earth’s temperature has risen by 1.24°C compared to pre-industrial levels, with 1.22°C of this warming caused directly by human activities. The year 2024 was recorded as the hottest year on record, with the global average temperature surpassing 1.5°C above the pre-industrial baseline for the first time.

  • Temperature Rise: The global average temperature increased by 1.24°C over the past decade.
  • Human Influence: 1.22°C of the temperature rise was driven by human activities, particularly fossil fuel use.

Projections for 2°C Carbon Budget

The study also highlights that if emissions continue at the current pace, the carbon budget for 2°C of warming could be exceeded by 2048, posing an even greater risk to global stability.

  • 2°C Target: The carbon budget for a 2°C increase in temperature is expected to be exhausted by 2048 under current emission trends.

Urgent Need for Emissions Reduction

In 2022, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) set a target for global greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced by 43% by 2030 compared to 2019 levels to keep global warming within the 1.5°C limit. However, recent comments from IPCC Chair Jim Skea suggest that this target is now outdated, as a lack of action has made the necessary reduction even more substantial.

  • IPCC Targets: The world must cut emissions by 43% by 2030 to stay within the 1.5°C limit.
  • Outdated Targets: The actual reduction needed is likely higher due to insufficient progress in emissions cuts.

1.5°C Threshold and Future Projections

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recently predicted a 70% chance that the global temperature will exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels between 2025 and 2029, marking a permanent breach of the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal.

  • Global Warming Projections: There is a 70% chance that the global temperature will exceed 1.5°C between 2025 and 2029.
