Samruddhi Mahamarg: Transforming 16 Locations into Smart Cities
The Maharashtra government has unveiled an ambitious plan to develop 16 locations along the Samruddhi Mahamarg into smart cities, marking a transformative second phase for the 701-km-long expressway. This initiative aims to foster economic growth, enhance infrastructure, and create jobs, cementing the Mahayuti government’s commitment to regional development under Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
The Vision of Samruddhi Mahamarg
The Samruddhi Mahamarg, officially named the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, connects Nagpur to Mumbai, passing through 10 districts. With its nearing full operational status, the focus has shifted to turning towns along the corridor into thriving hubs of urban progress.
The smart city initiative promises modern infrastructure, integrated industries, and improved living standards for the surrounding regions.
Identified Smart City Locations
The government’s master plan includes developing smart cities at the following locations:
- Wardha District: Virul
- Amravati District: Dattpur and Shivni
- Washim District: Sheh, Wanoj, and Ridhora
- Buldhana District: Sabra and Mal Savargaon

- Economic Growth Opportunities: Improved job markets and industrial growth tailored to regional needs.

- Processing and storage facilities for agricultural produce.
- Promotion of small-scale and agro-based industries.
- Creation of supply chain hubs to support local farmers.
A Benchmark for Sustainable Development
The Samruddhi Mahamarg smart city initiative aims to set new benchmarks in urban planning and regional development. Once completed, these smart cities will demonstrate the potential of integrating high-speed transport corridors with sustainable and inclusive urban growth.
