ICICI Bank’s ₹50,000 Minimum Balance Rule: What New Customers Must Know

ICICI Bank’s New ₹50,000 Minimum Balance Rule: How It Impacts You

Higher requirements from August 1, 2025

From August 1, 2025, ICICI Bank will implement a steep increase in the minimum monthly average balance (MAB) for new urban savings account holders. The new threshold will be ₹50,000, up from the earlier ₹10,000.

  • Semi-urban branches: MAB raised to ₹25,000 from ₹5,000.
  • Rural branches: MAB raised to ₹10,000 from ₹5,000.
  • Applies only to new accounts opened after August 1; existing accounts remain under the old rules.

What happens if you fail to maintain the balance

The bank tracks MAB monthly. Shortfalls can be offset by higher balances on other days within the same month.

Penalty calculation for urban accounts:

  • Charge: 6% of the shortfall or ₹500, whichever is lower.
  • GST: Applied to the penalty.

Example penalties based on shortfall:

Shortfall in MAB (₹)Penalty (₹)
5,000300
10,000500
20,000500
30,000500
40,000500

Who is exempt from penalties

Certain customer categories avoid these charges:

  • Select Banking: Deposits & balance ≥ ₹2 lakh, or total holdings ≥ ₹25 lakh.
  • Wealth Management: Deposits & balance ≥ ₹10 lakh, or total holdings ≥ ₹50 lakh.
  • Private Banking: Deposits & balance ≥ ₹50 lakh, or total holdings ≥ ₹5 crore.
  • Pensioners: Fully exempt.
  • Family Banking: Exempt if collective balance is ≥ 1.5× the programme criteria; otherwise, charges apply individually.

Implications for customers

  • Liquidity lock-in: Funds remain idle in low-interest accounts.
  • Opportunity cost: Lower returns compared to investment alternatives.
  • Behaviour shift: Likely consolidation of accounts to maintain fewer high-balance accounts.
  • Push to premium banking: Higher balances may qualify for bundled services.

Other fee changes

ICICI Bank is also revising transaction charges:

  • Cash deposits: First three branch or machine deposits are free; thereafter ₹150 each.
  • Non-banking hours deposits via machines: ₹50 per transaction after monthly deposits exceed ₹10,000.
  • Non-ICICI ATM usage in metros: After three free financial and three free non-financial transactions combined, ₹23 per financial and ₹8.50 per non-financial transaction applies.

Key takeaway

For new urban account holders, the higher ₹50,000 minimum balance significantly changes how much liquidity they must keep in their accounts. Strategic cash management will be key to avoiding penalties or making the most of the higher balance through premium banking benefits.
