New Huawei Smartwatch Update Enables External Sensor Pairing and VoLTE

The HarmonyOS 6.0.0.156 update enhances connectivity and fitness tracking, including VoLTE calling and new accessory support

A Smartwatch Grows Smarter

Huawei has begun rolling out HarmonyOS 6.0.0.156 to its flagship Watch Ultimate 2, introducing a range of new features designed to improve communication, connectivity, and fitness tracking. The update is 1.01 GB in size and is currently reaching users in Europe, where the wearable first launched in October 2025.

  • Device: Huawei Watch Ultimate 2
  • Update version: HarmonyOS 6.0.0.156
  • Rollout: Phased global release
  • Download method: Via Huawei Health app or directly on the watch under Settings > System & updates > Software updates

eSIM Gets More Capable in Power-Saving Mode

A standout feature in this update is enhanced eSIM functionality, especially in power-saving mode. With 6.0.0.156, users can now:

  • Make and receive calls using eSIM while in power-saving mode
  • Send and receive SMS messages via eSIM in the same mode
  • VoLTE (Voice over LTE) is now enabled by default for supported carriers
    • Note: VoLTE cannot be toggled manually by the user

This allows users to stay connected without sacrificing battery life, a key improvement for long workouts, hikes, or travel.

New Support for External Fitness Accessories

Huawei has also expanded the fitness ecosystem compatibility of the Watch Ultimate 2. After this update, the smartwatch can now pair with a range of external sensors, offering more precise and customizable workout tracking.

  • Newly supported sensors include:
    • Heart rate monitors
    • Power meters
    • Speed sensors
    • Cadence sensors

This opens the door for cyclists, runners, and triathletes to get more detailed performance data than what the watch alone can provide.

System Stability Enhancements

Alongside new features, the update brings general system stability improvements, ensuring smoother performance and potentially extending battery life. Though not detailed in the changelog, these backend refinements often improve responsiveness, connectivity reliability, and sensor accuracy.

Availability and Pricing Context

The Huawei Watch Ultimate 2 currently retails for around €872.03 on Amazon Germany, reflecting its premium positioning. The addition of eSIM-based VoLTE and expanded fitness tracking makes it a more well-rounded competitor in the high-end smartwatch market.
