The Budget Earbuds War: Samsung, LG, and Xiaomi Take on Apple

South Korea’s tech giants are betting on affordability to chip away at Apple’s dominance in the wireless earbuds market.

Apple Still Leads, But the Market is Shifting

Apple’s AirPods continue to dominate the wireless earbuds space, holding a 23.3% global share in Q1, according to Canalys. But the market is evolving. Xiaomi (11.5%), Samsung (7.1%), and Huawei (6%) are all gaining ground, with Xiaomi growing the fastest. Apple’s share, meanwhile, has dipped slightly.

LG’s Xboom Line: Affordable Choices

This year, LG rolled out three models under its Xboom Buds lineup, targeting budget-conscious users:

  • Xboom Buds Lite – 99,000 won (~$71)
  • Xboom Buds – 149,000 won (~$106)
  • Xboom Buds Plus – 199,000 won (~$142)

Despite lower prices, these models still promise solid features, catering to users who want reliable performance without overspending.

Samsung Bets on Galaxy Buds 3 FE

Samsung joined the affordability push with the Galaxy Buds 3 FE, launched at 159,000 won (~$113). The FE (Fan Edition) line offers a stripped-down yet feature-rich version of the premium Galaxy Buds 3, balancing price and performance.

Apple’s Premium Play

Apple’s AirPods Pro 3, priced at 369,000 won (~$263), remain at the premium end. They bring advanced sound quality, active noise cancelling, and even heart rate tracking, but at more than double the cost of Samsung and LG’s newest offerings.

Why Affordable Earbuds Are Winning

A report from Counterpoint Research highlights the trend: half of all earbuds sold in 2024 cost under $50. Consumers are steering away from high-end models, instead favoring mid-range and budget-friendly options that balance price with performance.

Experts say users increasingly value “good enough” features at lower prices, creating an opening for Samsung, LG, and Xiaomi to challenge Apple’s dominance.

The Bottom Line

With LG and Samsung doubling down on affordability, the wireless earbuds market is heating up. While Apple still leads, the demand for mid-priced, feature-rich models could reshape the competition — giving buyers more choice and potentially narrowing Apple’s lead.
