Don’t Buy the AMD Version: Intel’s MSI Claw 8 Is Simply Better

Despite using the powerful Ryzen Z2 Extreme, the AMD-powered MSI Claw A8 falls behind its Intel counterpart in comfort, battery life, and RAM — with no cost savings.

A New AMD Option That Misses the Mark

MSI has surprised the gaming handheld market by launching an AMD-powered variant of its Claw 8 device — the Claw A8, featuring the Ryzen Z2 Extreme. While on paper this looks like a strong contender to Intel’s Lunar Lake-powered Claw 8 AI+, real-world testing shows that the AMD version delivers less value at the same €999 price point.

From ergonomics to hardware specs, the Claw A8 simply doesn’t justify itself — even though AMD chips typically offer better efficiency in mobile gaming devices.

Downgraded Design and Comfort

The Claw A8 uses a completely different chassis than the Intel version, and not for the better:

  • More angular design reduces grip comfort
  • Smaller shoulder buttons and triggers are less ergonomic
  • Standard M.2 2280 SSD is a welcome improvement for upgradability

Despite the improved SSD format, the overall handling suffers, especially for extended play sessions — a critical flaw for any portable gaming system.

Less RAM, Same Price

One of the most baffling decisions: the AMD model only includes 24 GB of RAM, while the Intel version gets 32 GB — at no price difference.

This hardware downgrade, especially in memory-hungry AAA or emulation workloads, limits long-term performance and multitasking capabilities.

Performance and Power Profiles: No Clear Win

In benchmark comparisons, both the AMD and Intel models offer similar raw performance. However, MSI’s software experience on the Claw A8 isn’t fully optimized:

  • The new AI Engine mode replaces the three useful power profiles found in the Intel model
  • Manual tuning is possible, but the quick TDP adjustment options are gone
  • Battery life is better on the Lunar Lake (Intel) version, further reducing AMD’s edge

Without a clear performance advantage — and with less intuitive software controls — the Ryzen Z2 Extreme doesn’t get the chance to shine here.

Verdict: Stick with the Intel Version

Despite the hype around AMD’s Z2 Extreme, MSI’s execution in the Claw A8 falls short. It’s:

  • Less comfortable
  • Has less RAM
  • Offers no battery or performance advantage
  • And ships with the same €999 price tag

The Intel-based Claw 8 AI+ offers a more refined experience, superior ergonomics, and better overall value for the same money. If you’re in the market for a Claw handheld, it’s the Intel model we recommend — hands down.
