God of War Metroidvania Spin-Off Reportedly Delayed to 2026

Rumored 2.5D side project set in Ancient Greece won’t launch this year, says Jeff Grubb

Internal delay shifts timeline for God of War fans

The rumored God of War spin-off, believed to be a 2.5D Metroidvania-style game set in Ancient Greece, has reportedly been internally delayed to 2026. According to industry insider Jeff Grubb, who shared the update during the latest episode of the Last of the Nintendogs podcast, fans shouldn’t expect the project to launch anytime this year.

  • Grubb did not provide further details, but confirmed that the internal timeline has shifted, delaying the game by at least a year.

A smaller-scale project between mainline releases

Although not officially announced, the game has been described as a smaller-scale spin-off meant to bridge the gap before the next full entry in the God of War franchise.

  • The spin-off is said to embrace traditional Metroidvania elements, such as 2D exploration, ability-based progression, and a return to the Ancient Greek setting.
  • This differs from the 3D action-adventure structure introduced in the 2018 reboot and God of War Ragnarok, though those games also included light Metroidvania mechanics.

God of War’s evolving gameplay

Santa Monica Studio recently experimented with gameplay in the Valhalla update for God of War Ragnarok, introducing a roguelite mode that was praised for expanding the game’s replayability.

  • While the spin-off won’t feature the scale of Ragnarok, it’s expected to offer a unique twist on the franchise’s core mechanics in a compact format.

With the next major God of War installment still years away, this spin-off could serve as an exciting appetizer for fans—just not in 2025 as previously speculated.
