The long-awaited Patch 1.2 for Oblivion Remastered has been released, bringing modest performance gains across the board. However, even with these optimizations, the game continues to perform poorly on high-end systems, including the powerful NVIDIA RTX 5080 GPU, especially when running at native 4K resolution without Frame Generation.
Patch 1.2: Noticeable Improvements, But Not Enough
A new comparison video by MxBenchmarkPC highlights the side-by-side performance of the 1.2 patch versus the launch build. The latest update delivers some framerate stability improvements, particularly in open-world traversal. However, even with DLSS in Quality mode, ultra settings, and no Frame Generation, performance on the RTX 5080 leaves much to be desired:
- At native 4K, the game averages just above 30 FPS, despite the RTX 5080 being one of the most powerful consumer GPUs.
- With DLSS Quality mode enabled, framerate improves to the 40 FPS range, but remains well below the ideal 60 FPS target.
- At 1440p, performance climbs into the high 50s and low 70s, but still fails to maintain a consistent 60 FPS without Frame Generation.
- CPU-limited scenarios reveal additional inefficiencies, indicating that system bottlenecks exist beyond just the GPU.
In short, Patch 1.2 improves performance, but Oblivion Remastered still demands Frame Generation for smooth play—even on top-tier rigs.
Unreal Engine 5 Strikes Again
Oblivion Remastered is one of several recent titles built on Unreal Engine 5 to suffer from poor PC optimization. While the graphical upgrade and environmental fidelity are undeniable, the game’s technical demands far exceed what its content justifies.
