Pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is a popular houseplant that is known for its easy care and beautiful foliage. One of the best things about pothos is that it is incredibly easy to propagate, making it a great choice for beginner plant propagators. Here are the steps to propagate pothos:
Materials: -Sharp scissors or garden shears -Clean water or potting mix -Clean container or vase
Water propagation method:
- Cut a section of the pothos stem that has at least two or three leaves attached to it. The stem should be around four to six inches long.
- Fill a clean container or vase with water and place the pothos cutting in the water. Make sure that at least one node (a small bump on the stem where leaves emerge) is submerged in the water.
- Place the container or vase in a bright, indirect light location. Change the water every week or so to keep it clean and fresh.
- In a few weeks, roots will start to emerge from the submerged node. Once the roots are several inches long, you can transplant the cutting into soil.
Soil propagation method:
- Cut a section of the pothos stem that has at least two or three leaves attached to it. The stem should be around four to six inches long.
- Dip the cut end of the stem into rooting hormone powder, if desired.
- Plant the cutting into a small pot filled with moist potting mix. Make sure that at least one node is buried in the soil.
- Place the pot in a bright, indirect light location and keep the soil moist. In a few weeks, new growth will appear, which means the cutting has successfully rooted.
- Once the cutting has established roots and has grown a few inches, you can transplant it into a larger pot with regular potting soil.
