Indian Railways Scales Up Festive Travel with Record Ganpati Services in 2025

With a sharp rise in festive travel demand, the Railways is scaling up services across Maharashtra and Konkan for a smoother Ganesh Chaturthi experience.

Record-Breaking Train Services for Ganesh Festival

In a significant move to accommodate rising festive travel demand, Indian Railways has announced it will operate 380 Ganpati Special Train Trips in 2025 — the highest ever for the annual Ganesh Chaturthi season.

This marks a steady increase from 305 special trains in 2023 and 358 in 2024, underscoring the growing number of devotees traveling to Maharashtra and the Konkan region during the 10-day celebration.

Zone-Wise Breakdown of Services

The distribution of these 380 train trips has been planned zone-wise to ensure efficient coverage and regional access:

  • Central Railway: 296 trips — the largest share, focused on key cities and pilgrimage towns in Maharashtra and along the Konkan coast
  • Western Railway: 56 trips — targeting high-demand routes in Gujarat and western Maharashtra
  • Konkan Railway (KRCL): 6 trips — covering scenic coastal stretches and towns en route
  • South Western Railway: 22 trips — linking Karnataka with coastal Maharashtra for devotees traveling from the south

This well-calibrated allocation reflects Indian Railways’ effort to address passenger congestion and provide hassle-free travel across regions during peak season.

Key Routes and Devotee Hubs Covered

The Ganpati Special trains will operate extensively along the Konkan Railway route, a lifeline for coastal Maharashtra during the festival. Important halts include:

  • Kolad, Mangaon, Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Kudal, Sawantwadi Road
  • Thivim, Karmali, Madgaon Jn (Goa)
  • Karwar, Kumta, Murdeshwar, Udupi, Surathkal (Karnataka)

These halts are strategically chosen to serve both native residents returning home and pilgrims visiting temples and hometowns during Ganesh Chaturthi.

Festival Timeline and Operational Dates

Ganpati celebrations in 2025 will run from 27th August to 6th September. To cater to the early wave of travel, the first batch of Ganpati Special trains began service on 11th August 2025.

Services will continue to ramp up in frequency and capacity as the festival date approaches, ensuring adequate seating availability and smoother last-mile connectivity.

Booking and Travel Information

Passengers can access the full train schedules, booking availability, and updates through:

  • The official IRCTC website
  • The RailOne mobile app
  • Computerized PRS ticket counters across India

Advance reservations are strongly recommended due to the high occupancy rates expected during the festive window.

A Focus on Convenience and Safety

Indian Railways has reiterated its commitment to delivering safe, timely, and comfortable travel experiences during Ganesh Chaturthi. Enhanced coordination between zones, well-maintained coaches, and real-time scheduling updates aim to minimize disruption and maximize passenger satisfaction.

These efforts reflect not just logistical planning, but also an understanding of the emotional and cultural significance of Ganesh Chaturthi for millions of Indians.
