India Launches National Training Program to Skill Youth in EV and Green Energy
Government partners with Shell India to build a climate-ready workforce and boost net-zero goals
The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), through the Directorate General of Training (DGT), has partnered with Shell India to launch a new skilling initiative focused on Electric Vehicles (EVs) and green energy technologies. This national-level program aims to prepare India’s youth for careers in sustainable sectors, aligning with the country’s net-zero ambitions.
Creating a Climate-Ready Workforce
Minister Jayant Chaudhary emphasized that this initiative reflects the government’s commitment to “aligning skilling with sustainability“:
- “This is a generational opportunity for India to lead through innovation, talent, and enterprise,” he said.
- The programme is part of a broader effort to make youth not just job-ready, but climate-ready, by equipping them to shape the global green economy.
Structured Multi-Tier Training Model
The training will be delivered through a multi-tier model across key states including Delhi-NCR, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka:
- A 240-hour advanced EV technician course will be introduced at four National Skill Training Institutes (NSTIs).
- A 90-hour job-oriented EV skills course will run at 12 ITIs supported by Shell-backed labs.
- A 50-hour foundational green skills module will be offered at additional ITIs without lab infrastructure.
Industry-Aligned Curriculum and Certification
Developed jointly by Shell, Edunet Foundation, and the DGT, the curriculum includes:
- Training in EV systems, diagnostics, battery technologies, digital tools, and safety standards.
- Training of Trainers (ToT) for over 250 instructors to ensure quality delivery.
- Co-branded certifications from Shell and DGT, coupled with structured placement support, to enhance employability.
Empowering Through Labs and Practical Learning
Specialised EV skill labs will be established at select NSTIs and ITIs, offering:
- Hands-on experience with real-world equipment.
- Expert-led sessions aligned with current industry needs.
According to Mansi Madan Tripathy, Chairperson of Shell Group India, this collaboration provides students with “practical and future-ready expertise” to actively contribute to India’s evolving green energy landscape.
This forward-looking programme not only bridges India’s skill gap in green technology but also plays a vital role in positioning the country as a leader in sustainable innovation.
