At the Tamil Nadu Matchbox Industry Centenary, the Finance Minister highlights GST’s transformative role and honours women workers as the industry’s driving force.
Celebrating 100 Years of the Matchbox Industry
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman marked a century of India’s iconic matchbox industry by attending the Tamil Nadu Matchbox Industry Centenary Celebration in Kovilpatti, Thoothukudi district.
- The event was jointly organised by several industry bodies, including the National Small Matchbox Manufacturers Association, and drew over 10,000 manufacturers and workers.
- The celebration featured an exhibition of products, medical camps, and community meals to honour the industry’s workforce.
Tribute to Women Workers: The Backbone of the Industry
Sitharaman paid heartfelt tribute to the women workers of the matchbox sector, acknowledging their pivotal yet underrepresented role.
“Women have driven this industry forward, working even in difficult conditions to sustain their families,” she said.
“Though many men are on this stage, at least one woman worker should have been here too.”
- Her remarks highlighted the gendered labour dynamics of the matchbox industry, which employs thousands of women in rural Tamil Nadu.
- Sitharaman interacted personally with women workers and praised their resilience and contribution.
GST: A Structural Revolution, Not a Tax Tweak
The Finance Minister described the Goods and Services Tax (GST) reform as a “revolution” that goes far beyond tax simplification.
- She pointed to the reduction of taxes on 375 products by 10%, which she called a “Diwali gift” from the Modi government.
- The reform, she asserted, has led to lower consumer prices and greater transparency, benefiting both manufacturers and common citizens.
“GST reform is not a mere tax change but a revolution,” she emphasised.
Southern Districts Not Overlooked
Sitharaman reiterated the Modi government’s commitment to southern Tamil Nadu, despite political differences in representation.
- “Any request made regarding the southern districts, the Prime Minister immediately considers,” she said.
- She dedicated the event to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, whose birthday coincided with the celebrations.
A Call for Political Alignment
The Finance Minister also used the platform to urge the public to elect leaders who can support industrial and regional growth.
- She specifically mentioned AIADMK senior leader Kadambur C. Raju and encouraged voters to elect MLAs in 2026 and MPs in 2029 who align with the development agenda.
- Sitharaman affectionately referred to BJP state president Nainar Nagendran as “Pannaiyar,” echoing local respect.
A Convergence of Leaders and Industry Voices
The event saw participation from both BJP and AIADMK leaders, along with key figures from the matchbox manufacturing industry.
- Speakers included BJP National Women’s Wing President Vanathi Srinivasan (MLA), Kadambur Raju, and several senior industry association leaders.
- The presence of these leaders highlighted a rare moment of unity between political figures and local industrial communities.
