Fertility Tech Gets a Boost: Luma Raises $4M, Expands Beyond Mumbai

With fresh funding from Peak XV’s Surge and healthcare veterans, Mumbai-based Luma Fertility aims to scale its AI-powered fertility services across major Indian cities.

Luma Fertility Secures $4 Million in Funding

Luma Fertility, a Mumbai-based fertility-tech startup, has raised $4 million in a seed round led by Peak XV Partners’ Surge platform. The round also saw participation from industry leaders like Ameera Shah (Metropolis Healthcare) and Vijay Taparia (B2V Ventures).

The startup, founded by Neha K Motwani, plans to use the funds to expand its network of full-stack fertility clinics across India, starting with two more centers in Mumbai before expanding to Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and Delhi over the next two years.

A Vision for Modern, Accessible Fertility Care

Founded just a year ago, Luma Fertility is already creating a stir in the fragmented fertility services sector by combining clinical expertise, technology, and transparent care models.

Motwani, who previously built fitness marketplace Fitternity (acquired by Cure.fit), envisions a patient-first approach to fertility, focusing on both medical success and emotional trust.

  • The flagship clinic in Bandra West, Mumbai spans 6,000 sq ft, offering IVF, egg and embryo freezing, fertility assessments, and preconception consultations.
  • Its in-house AI tool, LumaAI, assists with personalized care planning and treatment guidance.
  • Led by two full-time doctors and renowned embryologist Chirag Shah (who has conducted over 10,000 IVF cycles), the clinic has completed over 500 consultations to date.

Transparent, Tech-Driven Treatment

Unlike conventional setups, Luma’s clinic places emphasis on transparency and visibility — literally. Its see-through embryology lab reflects its philosophy of openness in a space where trust and clarity are critical.

  • Chirag Shah, recognized among India’s top embryologists, leads lab operations.
  • Luma’s design and technology integration aim to reduce anxiety while improving patient outcomes.
  • The clinic runs with a 20-member team, including clinicians, embryologists, and support staff.

This blend of tech and care makes it one of the few consumer-centric fertility clinics in the country.

Why Investors Are Backing Luma

Fertility care in India is evolving. With rising infertility rates and increasing awareness, demand is surging, but the system remains highly fragmented.

According to IMARC Group, India’s fertility services market is set to grow from $1.5 billion in 2024 to $4.41 billion by 2033, at a 12.7% CAGR.

  • Ameera Shah (Metropolis Healthcare) highlighted the need for modernized, accessible fertility care.
  • Vijay Taparia (B2V Ventures) emphasized Neha Motwani’s proven leadership, citing her earlier success with Fitternity.
  • Peak XV’s Surge program continues to back early-stage startups with strong founder-market fit and scalable models.

Competing in a Growing Market

Luma joins a competitive field where major players like Apollo Fertility, Birla Fertility and IVF, and Nova Fertility Centre are expanding their footprints. However, Luma’s differentiator lies in its AI-first, transparent, and consumer-focused model.

Its expansion roadmap focuses on urban hubs with high fertility care demand, supported by a scalable clinic-in-a-clinic model and centralized lab support.

What’s Next for Luma Fertility?

With fresh capital and a growing patient base, Luma will:

  • Launch two more clinics in Mumbai in the near term
  • Expand to four additional cities over the next two years
  • Enhance AI capabilities with more data-driven personalization
  • Scale team strength and embryology capacity to meet rising demand
  • Continue investing in transparency and lab innovation for better patient trust

As India’s fertility care market matures, Luma is positioning itself as the tech-enabled, trust-led disruptor in a category ready for reinvention.
