No More Daily Geo-Tagged Photos: Big Relief for CGHS Patients and Hospitals

Health Ministry eases geo-tagging photo rules and expands physiotherapy access for elderly and seriously ill patients.

CGHS Guidelines Updated for Better Ease and Access

The Union Health Ministry has introduced several beneficiary-friendly changes under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS). The updated rules aim to ease procedural burdens on hospitals and patients while improving access to essential care, especially for senior citizens and critically ill individuals.

Let’s look at the key updates that bring relief to lakhs of CGHS users across India.

Big Relief: Geo-Tagged Photo Rules Relaxed

Until now, hospitals had to upload geo-tagged photos daily for CGHS beneficiaries admitted under inpatient (IPD) care — a rule that caused considerable inconvenience.

What has changed?

  • One-time waiver granted for all past cases where geo-tagged photos were missed.
  • No photos needed for IPD cases with valid referral – only ensure the referral is uploaded on the NHA portal.

New guidelines for geo-tagged photos:

Case TypePhoto Requirement
IPD (with referral)No photo required
IPD (non-referral: emergencies, 70+ age, follow-ups)2 photos – at admission and discharge
IPD (>7 days stay)1 extra photo every 7th day
OPD (with referral)No photo required
OPD (without referral)✅ Photo mandatory if patient is 70+, bedridden, or follow-up
  • Photos must be taken inside ICU/ward.
  • Use mobile or tablet; image size should be less than 1 MB.
  • Upload to CGHS portal within 24 hours.
  • No need to show CGHS card in photo.

Physiotherapy Access Simplified and Expanded

Recognizing the need for accessible rehabilitative care, the Ministry has also streamlined physiotherapy services under CGHS.

Current staffing update:

  • 5 physiotherapists currently deputed at the Parliament House Medical Centre.
  • Recruitment process underway to fill the remaining vacancy.

Where can CGHS members avail physiotherapy?

  • Any government hospital
  • Private hospitals empanelled with CGHS

Home-based physiotherapy:

  • Domiciliary physiotherapy is available at home for eligible, needy beneficiaries.
  • Governed by guidelines issued earlier on 1 June 2011 – still valid today.

What These Changes Mean for CGHS Beneficiaries

  • 🔹 Simpler processes reduce confusion for hospitals and ease the burden on patients.
  • 🔹 Senior citizens and bedridden patients now face fewer procedural hurdles.
  • 🔹 Flexibility in physiotherapy enhances post-hospitalization care and quality of life.
  • 🔹 Encourages more efficient treatment coordination through improved clarity in guidelines.

Final Word: Stay Informed, Stay Covered

These CGHS reforms reflect the government’s intent to modernize healthcare delivery for its employees and pensioners. All CGHS beneficiaries — especially elderly patients and their caregivers — are encouraged to understand and follow the new rules to avoid delays or disruptions in medical services.
