As James Michael Nolan, Ph.D., a psychologist and law of attraction coach, explains, “When that thing does not show up, it is too easy to get the message, ‘You did it wrong. You did not actually align with the allegedly desired outcome, so of course it did not show up.’” This mindset can lead to a cycle of self-blame, where individuals feel they are not “good enough” at manifesting their desires.

The Risks of Wishful Thinking

Critics argue that the law of attraction might encourage people to blame themselves for negative events beyond their control, such as accidents or health issues. Nolan points out that believing you can manifest highly improbable outcomes, like a golden castle on Mars or a trillion-dollar windfall, is a form of wishful thinking. “That’s wishful thinking—when there is not even a remote chance of one having the agency to affect such outcomes,” he notes. Positive envisioning, however, involves setting realistic and achievable goals. It’s about imagining possibilities that are within reach. Nolan suggests, “If one envisions themselves as wealthy, owning their own company and a fancy red car, going to Paris or Jaipur at the drop of a hat—well, those things actually do happen for a fair number of people, so one might reasonably envision them as a possibility.” Positive envisioning is grounded in the belief that with effort and the right mindset, goals that seem far-fetched can indeed become achievable.

The Importance of Realistic Goals

When using the law of attraction, it’s essential to set goals that are both inspiring and attainable. According to Christy Whitman, a master-certified law of attraction coach, “The goal is to embrace the sensation of what it feels like to do, be or have the outcome you’re working toward.” She emphasizes that it’s not just about imagining success but about aligning your energy with achievable outcomes. For example, visualizing having a million dollars might be unrealistic if you are currently in debt, as it could trigger doubt rather than motivation.

Whitman underscores, “If we spend all our time visualizing, meditating and ‘acting as if’ without taking action in the physical world, we are not doing our part in the manifestation equation.” True manifestation requires more than just positive thoughts; it demands setting goals, facing challenges, and actively working towards your desires.
