Bluesky’s New Notification Updates: More Control, Less Clutter

Bluesky Introduces Enhanced Notification Customization for Users

Bluesky has rolled out three updates to improve notification management, enabling users to tailor their notification preferences while minimizing unwanted alerts. The new features aim to offer a more personalized experience by focusing on key activities and interactions, without overwhelming users.

  • The updates allow users to customize activity notifications for specific accounts.
  • Notifications can now be adjusted to control which alerts users receive based on their preferences.
  • One of the new options allows users to opt-in for notifications when certain accounts reply to them.

Simplified Notification Controls and Preferences

Users can now navigate to the Settings menu, followed by the Notifications section, where they can fine-tune alerts for various interactions, such as new followers, likes, replies, mentions, quotes, and reposts.

  • An “Everything Else” option is available for broader notifications, such as updates related to account verification or when someone joins via a Starter Pack.
  • Each category of notifications can be set to apply only to accounts the user follows or to everyone.
  • Users can choose to disable notifications for certain interactions entirely, offering greater flexibility.

New Engagement Alerts for Reposts and Likes

A notable update includes the ability for users to receive notifications when someone likes their repost or reshares their content. This enhancement is especially beneficial for users who primarily share content, as it helps them feel more engaged in the community.

  • This feature supports the growing trend of resharing content, offering an additional layer of interaction for users focused on redistributing posts.

Replacement of Priority Notifications

Bluesky has replaced the previous “priority notifications” feature, which allowed users to filter notifications and receive updates only from accounts they follow. To maintain this functionality, users must now modify settings for reply, mention, and quote notifications to the “people you follow only” option.

  • This change aims to streamline the notification process while preserving the ability to limit notifications to specific accounts.

Activity Notifications for New Posts and Replies

The newly introduced activity notification feature mirrors similar functionalities found on platforms like X and Threads. Users can now choose to receive alerts when a followed account posts new content or replies to an existing post.

  • To activate this feature, users can visit a profile and tap the bell icon next to the Follow button to receive updates when that account shares a new post.
  • There is also a distinct option for notifications related to replies.

Manage Activity Alerts Efficiently

Bluesky offers users the ability to manage their activity notifications directly from the settings menu. If users no longer wish to receive updates from certain accounts, they can easily remove them from their list.

  • However, account owners can disable activity notifications entirely, which means users may not be able to activate notifications for all accounts they want to follow.

By offering these updates, Bluesky enhances the user experience with more control over notifications, ensuring users can stay informed while avoiding unnecessary alerts.
