The good news is that you can take steps to reduce these unwanted messages. Here’s how you can manage your inbox more effectively and unsubscribe from emails you no longer wish to receive.

Understanding Unwanted Emails

Unwanted emails, or digital junk mail, often include marketing messages, sales announcements, or notifications from political campaigns and charities. These emails are not inherently harmful, and you might have initially signed up for them due to interest in the content. However, they can quickly become overwhelming and unmanageable.

Why Unsubscribe from Unwanted Emails?

Unsolicited emails can clog your inbox, using up valuable storage space and making it harder to find important messages. Furthermore, they waste your time, as sifting through hundreds of emails can cause you to miss or delay responses to crucial communications.

Some unwanted emails might also contain malware or phishing attempts, posing a risk to your digital security. It’s more efficient and safer to unsubscribe from these emails rather than deleting them repeatedly.

Steps to Unsubscribe from Emails

Identify Unwanted Messages

Start by identifying the emails you no longer wish to receive. Ask yourself:

  • Do you read emails from this sender?
  • Are you interested in their offers or content?
  • Did you accidentally sign up for too many lists?

If the answer is no, it’s time to unsubscribe.

Most marketing emails include an unsubscribe link. Typically, you’ll find it at the bottom of the email, often hidden among fine print. In some email services, you may need to click an icon or ellipsis (three dots) to reveal the unsubscribe link. Click this link to unsubscribe from the sender’s list. However, be cautious, as some links may be scams. If an email looks suspicious, mark it as spam instead.

Use the Unsubscribe Button

In some emails, you might find an unsubscribe button labeled “Unsubscribe,” “Opt-Out,” or “Manage Preferences.” Clicking this button might either directly unsubscribe you or lead you to a page where you can manage your subscription preferences.

Check Your Spam Folder

Some unwanted emails may already be in your spam folder. Periodically check this folder and unsubscribe from any senders you no longer wish to receive emails from.

Unsubscribe Tools from Email Providers


Gmail offers an easy way to unsubscribe if it detects a working unsubscribe link in the message:

  • When you open the email, an unsubscribe link will appear next to the sender’s address.
  • Click the link, then click the unsubscribe button that appears.

On the Gmail mobile app:

  • Tap the three-dot menu at the top.
  • Select unsubscribe from the menu.


In Outlook, you can unsubscribe from emails in personal accounts (not business accounts) on the desktop version:

  • Look for a message above the sender’s address saying, “Getting too much email?” and click Unsubscribe.

If you don’t see this message:

  • Right-click the email, then select Ignore. Future messages from this sender will go directly to your deleted folder.

Apple Mail

In the Apple iOS Mail app, you might see a notice saying, “This message is from a mailing list. Unsubscribe.” Click this notice to request removal from the sender’s list.
