Elon Musk urges followers to cancel Netflix, triggering stock dip and reigniting debates over free speech, cancel culture, and LGBTQ+ representation.
Musk’s Call Sparks Stock Slide
Netflix shares hit a two-month low after Elon Musk publicly urged his 227 million followers on X (formerly Twitter) to cancel their subscriptions. The billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX took aim at the streaming giant over an animated series, Dead End: Paranormal Park, which featured a teenage transgender character.
- Stock Impact: Netflix stock fell sharply on Thursday following Musk’s posts.
- Public Message: Musk declared, “Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids.”
Though the series was cancelled in 2023 after two seasons, it resurfaced in conservative circles when clips were shared online, reigniting controversy over what some describe as a “woke agenda.”
Target: Dead End and Its Creator
At the center of the storm is Dead End: Paranormal Park, an animated show praised for its diverse and inclusive storytelling. The backlash intensified as:
- Conservative accounts like Libs of TikTok shared old clips as “evidence” of indoctrination.
- Musk amplified those narratives, stating the content was “not ok.”
The show’s creator, Hamish Steele, became a focus when a past social media post resurfaced, in which he referred to conservative activist Charlie Kirk as a “Nazi” after Kirk’s death. Musk reposted messages accusing Steele of celebrating the incident.
Steele’s understated reply: “It’s probably going to be a very odd day.”
Accusations Fly: “Grooming,” “Propaganda,” and Diversity Backlash
Musk’s campaign escalated into broader accusations against Netflix, reposting claims that the platform promotes:
- Grooming and propaganda
- Anti-white discrimination
- Excessive focus on racial diversity in hiring directors
These allegations stemmed from Netflix’s diversity report, which highlighted its efforts to support underrepresented creatives.
Personal History Adds Fuel
Musk’s stance on transgender issues carries personal weight. In 2022, his daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson came out as transgender and legally severed ties with him, stating she no longer wanted any association with her father.
- Musk has since said she is “dead” to him, blaming her transition on what he calls the “woke mind virus.”
His campaign gained traction with right-wing figures, including comedian Rob Schneider, who praised Musk for standing up against what he called “evil trans indoctrination programming.”
No Comment From Netflix, but Signs of Fallout
Netflix has yet to respond publicly to the controversy. It’s unclear what impact Musk’s boycott campaign will have on subscription numbers, as the company no longer shares quarterly subscriber data.
However, users on X have posted screenshots of cancellations, and the stock decline suggests the narrative has spooked some investors.
