Hyundai is now collaborating with Uncaged Innovations, a startup developing plant-based leather alternatives that come impressively close to the real thing—without the ethical or environmental costs.
From Wheat to Wheel: How It’s Made
Unlike typical faux leather, which is plastic-based and made from fossil fuels, Uncaged’s material is composed primarily of grains like wheat, corn, and soy.
- The startup mimics the chemical structure of leather, using plant proteins to form fibril-like structures—similar to collagen fibers in animal hides.
- These are bonded to a plant-fiber cloth backing, creating a fully biodegradable material.
