TikTok Shop Rolls Out Gift Cards as E-Commerce Arms Race Heats Up

With personalization features and $500M in holiday sales, TikTok doubles down on U.S. e-commerce—despite looming threats of a ban.

TikTok’s Latest Power Play in U.S. E-Commerce

TikTok Shop has officially entered the digital gift card game, launching a new feature that allows U.S. users to send and personalize gift cards ranging from $10 to $500.

The rollout, timed for the holiday shopping season, positions TikTok to compete more directly with Amazon and eBay, both of which have long dominated digital gifting.

“This is more than a gift card—it’s a foothold in consumer loyalty,” said a former eBay exec. “TikTok is playing the long game.”

Users can customize cards with animated designs for occasions like birthdays, weddings, and thank-yous. Cards are delivered via email and redeemable through a user’s TikTok Balance.

Social Gifting Gets a Makeover

TikTok is betting on social-first gifting, aiming to blend the emotional impact of real-world exchanges with the convenience of digital shopping.

Planned updates in early 2026 will allow:

  • Personal video messages to be recorded or uploaded.
  • An “interactive unboxing” feature that captures the recipient’s real-time reaction—likely another move to encourage shareable content loops within the app.

Recipients can also reply with thank-you notes or send gift cards in return, building virality into the gifting process.

Timing Is Everything—And So Is Trust

The feature drops during a critical sales period and amid intense scrutiny over TikTok’s U.S. operations.

  • TikTok Shop reported $500M in U.S. sales during Black Friday to Cyber Monday 2025.
  • But a potential ban still looms, with the U.S. government requiring TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, to sell U.S. operations by Jan 23, 2026, or face shutdown.

“TikTok is building a fully functioning commerce engine while the clock ticks,” noted a retail analyst. “It’s a sprint with no guarantee of a finish line.”

Despite the political uncertainty, TikTok Shop continues expanding:

  • Recent entry into luxury retail.
  • Deepening creator partnerships to fuel affiliate-driven product discovery.

Amazon, eBay, and the Gen Z Threat

TikTok’s gift cards aren’t just a convenience—they’re a loyalty weapon designed to keep users shopping inside the app. And it’s especially targeting younger buyers who increasingly skip traditional platforms.

By integrating social gifting into the TikTok ecosystem, the app is:

  • Shortening the path from content to checkout.
  • Reducing friction for repeat purchases and peer-to-peer commerce.
  • Creating non-refundable store credit—a page out of Amazon’s own playbook.

“This is TikTok’s way of saying: you don’t need to leave the app to shop, not even to send a gift,” said a commerce strategist.

A Retail Future Powered by Content

If TikTok clears the regulatory hurdles, its combination of viral content, creator commerce, and now personalized gifting could define a new era of retail.

  • Imagine influencers promoting gift cards with their own video messages.
  • Or gifting becoming a social chain reaction, embedded in TikTok trends.

The app’s evolution from entertainment to commerce platform continues to blur the line between media and marketplace—and its new gift cards may become the gateway drug for TikTok-native retail behavior.
