Why This Question Matters More Than You Think
At first glance, “Why do you want to work here?” may seem easy. But many job seekers underestimate its importance and walk in underprepared.
This question is your opportunity to show alignment between your goals, values, and the company’s mission. A vague or generic answer can signal a lack of genuine interest or preparation. A thoughtful, specific one demonstrates commitment, enthusiasm, and readiness.
Approach #1: Show Passion for the Company’s Mission or Product
Employers want to know you care about what they do. Whether it’s their service, product, or core values, enthusiasm must be authentic.
- Connect the company’s mission to your own life experience or beliefs.
- Highlight why their work matters to you personally — not just professionally.
- Review their values, social impact, or industry leadership before the interview.

Be Specific, Always
Generic statements like “I think your company is great” or “I’m passionate about teamwork” fall flat. Add details that personalize your response.
- Refer to specific projects, initiatives, or products.
- Mention personal experiences or examples that tie into the role.
- Tailor your answer to each job — no one-size-fits-all replies.
What Not to Say
Even if true, avoid reasons that center on what you want to get from the job rather than what you’ll give.
Don’t say:
- “Because the salary is good.”
- “I want to work remotely.”
- “It’s close to home.”
