ARK Invest Buys Deere, Sells Rocket Lab: Here’s What It Means

ARK Invest adjusts its innovation-focused portfolios, doubling down on AI-driven agriculture and mental health treatments while rebalancing space and genomics exposure.

ARK Invest’s October 17 Portfolio Moves Highlight Strategic Shifts

Cathie Wood, founder and CEO of ARK Invest, made a fresh series of notable portfolio moves on October 17, signaling her shifting convictions across tech, biotech, and autonomous sectors. Known for her focus on disruptive innovation, Wood’s trades provide insight into emerging themes and sector-specific positioning.

Wood Adds to Deere and ATAI Stakes

The standout buy of the day was Deere & Co. (NYSE: DE), a non-traditional ARK holding that is gaining more attention due to its increasing use of autonomous and AI-based farming technologies.

  • ARKQ and ARKX collectively added 9,386 shares worth approximately $4.29 million.
  • This marks the second DE purchase in a week, suggesting rising conviction in agri-tech innovation as a long-term theme.

Wood also made a large move in biotech, specifically in ATAI Life Sciences (NASDAQ: ATAI):

  • The ARK Genomic Revolution ETF (ARKG) bought 725,281 shares, valued at $3.97 million.
  • ATAI focuses on mental health treatments, including psychedelic-assisted therapies, a growing frontier in biotech.

These additions show a broadening of ARK’s innovation thesis to include companies advancing digital agriculture and alternative mental health care.

Smaller Buy: Self-Driving Tech in China

Continuing ARK’s AI and autonomy focus, ARKQ added 16,371 shares of Pony.ai, worth about $334,000.

  • Pony.ai, based in China, is a key ARK holding in the self-driving tech space, and remains a consistent pick throughout the month.
  • Despite recent stock volatility, Wood appears to be maintaining a long-term bullish stance on autonomy.

Trimming Rocket Lab, Natera, and Other Biotech Names

On the sell side, ARK made several trims across space and healthcare stocks:

  • Rocket Lab (NASDAQ: RKLB):
    • 66,070 shares sold, totaling roughly $4.43 million.
    • Reflects a continuation of recent profit-taking or risk management in aerospace holdings.
  • Natera Inc. (NASDAQ: NTRA):
    • 71,147 shares sold, worth $1.29 million.
    • The company specializes in genetic testing and diagnostics.
  • Adaptive Biotechnologies (NASDAQ: ADPT):
    • 72,537 shares trimmed, totaling $1.25 million.
    • This reduction aligns with ARKG’s recent rebalancing across biotech names.
  • Quantum-Si Inc. (NASDAQ: QSI):
    • 13,758 shares sold, worth $349,000.
    • The company’s protein sequencing tools have struggled with demand, contributing to ARK’s cautious posture.

These sales suggest ARK is reallocating capital toward higher-conviction opportunities, while reducing exposure to companies with slower commercialization or near-term headwinds.

What It Means for Investors

Wood’s latest moves suggest three clear investment themes:

  1. AI is expanding beyond Big Tech – evidenced by ARK’s deeper commitment to Deere and Pony.ai.
  2. Mental health biotech is gaining institutional attention, with ATAI emerging as a core bet.
  3. Genomics and space remain part of the long-term vision, but near-term volatility is prompting cautious rebalancing.

With ARK ETFs often acting as barometers for retail innovation investors, these trades could influence sentiment and signal upcoming shifts in related sectors.
