Gen Z Drives Shift in Wedding Trends, Spending More Than Ever

Indian Couples Increasingly Invest in Expensive Wedding Venues

An online survey reveals that 40% of couples in India now spend over Rs. 7.5 lakh (US$ 8,750) on wedding venues, with 31% willing to exceed Rs. 10 lakh (US$ 11,667). The average wedding venue cost has surged to Rs. 6 lakh (US$ 7,000), up from Rs. 4.7 lakh (US$ 5,484) in 2023.

The survey, which gathered insights from 2,000 couples across India, highlights a demographic shift in weddings. Gen Z now accounts for 62% of marriages, reflecting a 49% increase from last year. Meanwhile, millennials make up 30%, a decline from 54% in 2023.

Weddings Are Getting Longer and More Personalized

Indian weddings are evolving into multi-day celebrations, with 35% lasting at least three days and 32% extending to four days or more. Couples are adding personalized touches, including:

  • Custom outfits (61%) to reflect unique themes.
  • Sustainable elements (27%) like eco-friendly décor and waste reduction.
  • Intimate “first look” moments (21%) before the ceremony.

Shifting Priorities in Wedding Planning

While cost remains a factor for 53% of couples, it is no longer the top concern. Instead, the guest experience—including food, drinks, and entertainment—has become the biggest priority.

On average, couples allocate 21% of their household income to wedding expenses. Digital tools are also playing a bigger role in planning, with 79% using WhatsApp for coordination and wedding websites gaining popularity for invitations and event schedules.

Weddings are no longer just about tradition—they are becoming personalized, unforgettable experiences,” said Ms. Snigdha Johar, Consumer Marketing Manager at WeddingWire India.
