Strategic Procurement to Strengthen Armoured Forces
The Ministry of Defence is preparing a high-value procurement order for 500 Invar anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) from Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL), aimed at enhancing the firepower of India’s T-90 tanks.
- The deal, valued between ₹2,000 crore and ₹3,000 crore, is currently undergoing financial vetting to determine the exact contract value and level of approval needed.
- Invar missiles, known for their precision strike capabilities, are integral to India’s frontline tank regiments, offering tactical superiority in mechanised warfare.
Approval Pipeline and Procurement Process
The approval route depends on the final contract size:
- Orders below ₹2,000 crore can be cleared by the Defence Minister, while those closer to ₹3,000 crore need the Finance Minister’s nod.
- Deals exceeding ₹3,000 crore require approval from the Union Cabinet.
- The proposal will pass through the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), which earlier this month sanctioned ₹40,000 crore under emergency powers to fast-track defence procurement.
Self-Reliance and Operational Readiness
The planned missile acquisition aligns with India’s push for defence indigenisation under the Make in India initiative.
- BDL, a public sector defence firm, plays a key role in developing indigenous missile systems and has a proven track record in delivering Invar missiles.
- The current order is expected to bolster operational readiness along the western and northern borders, where T-90 tanks form the core of India’s armoured divisions.
Context: Operation Sindoor and Military Modernisation
The missile order comes in the wake of Operation Sindoor, a precision military strike carried out by India following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in 26 civilian deaths.
- The operation targeted terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, showcasing India’s homegrown defence capabilities.
- Technologies like drone warfare, layered air defence, and electronic warfare were prominently used, underscoring the shift toward self-reliant, high-tech military responses.
BDL Positioned for Long-Term Growth
Bharat Dynamics Ltd is well-placed to benefit from India’s ongoing defence modernisation drive.
- The company has a robust order book of ₹3,110 crore, and is targeting 28–30% revenue growth in FY25.
- BDL has successfully indigenised key components to navigate global supply chain disruptions and plans to double production in 3–5 years, and triple it within a decade, signaling aggressive capacity expansion to meet future demands.
