Nvidia Acquires AI Startup CentML to Bolster AI Software Capabilities
CentML Team and Tech to Strengthen Nvidia’s Position in AI Efficiency
Nvidia (NVDA) has acquired Toronto-based AI startup CentML, in a deal first reported by The Logic and widely seen as a significant move for both companies and their investors.
- The acquisition brings CentML’s expertise in optimizing AI model efficiency and hardware utilization directly under Nvidia’s expanding AI portfolio.
Following the deal, CentML CEO Gennady Pekhimenko has become a Senior Director for AI Software at Nvidia,
- With the startup’s CTO and COO also joining Nvidia in key managerial roles.
- At least 15 engineers and two interns from CentML have transitioned to Nvidia this month,
- While some positions were eliminated as part of an “organizational restructuring.”
CentML, founded in 2022, focused on enabling companies to run AI models more efficiently by improving hardware resource management.
- The startup had previously raised $30.9 million in venture capital, including a $27 million seed round with participation from Nvidia last year.
- CentML was also a member of Nvidia’s accelerator program and had an existing partnership with the chip giant prior to the acquisition.
CentML has announced it will cease offering services by July 17, as shared via Slack and X (formerly Twitter).
Nvidia’s Market Momentum Continues
Nvidia shares are up nearly 17% year-to-date,
- With Friday’s rally pushing the company’s market cap to approximately $3.78 trillion.
- Analysts at Wedbush project that Nvidia could reach a $4 trillion valuation this year, and possibly $5 trillion within the next 18 months as demand for AI accelerates.
