Rashtriya Gokul Mission Boosts Indigenous Breed Development

India Leads Global Milk Production, Targets 300 MMT in Five Years

India, the world’s largest milk producer, has set a goal to boost milk production to 300 million metric tons (MMT) within the next five years, up from the current 239 MMT.

  • Union Minister Rajeev Ranjan Singh announced this target in the Lok Sabha, highlighting India’s rapid growth in the dairy sector.
  • Since the launch of the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) in 2014, milk production has increased by 63.5%, with further growth of 15% expected in the next three years.

The dairy industry directly supports 10 crore people, with women comprising 75% of the workforce, emphasizing their crucial role in the sector.

  • India’s per capita milk consumption is 471 grams, reflecting a strong domestic demand for dairy products.

Rashtriya Gokul Mission: Strengthening Dairy Development

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying is implementing the Rashtriya Gokul Mission (RGM) to develop and conserve indigenous cattle breeds while improving milk production.

  • This initiative runs from 2021-22 to 2025-26 and aims to genetically upgrade the bovine population using advanced breeding technologies.
  • The scheme promotes high genetic merit bulls for breeding, expands artificial insemination coverage, and encourages the rearing of indigenous cattle and buffaloes.

By leveraging scientific advancements and sustainable practices, India continues to solidify its global leadership in milk production, ensuring long-term growth in the dairy sector.
