Welspun to Reinvent Sintex with Focus on Pipes, Water Recycling, and Electricals

Welspun Expands Sintex Portfolio, Eyes 5% Pipe Market Share in Seven Years

Welspun Group, led by the Goenka family, is transforming Sintex—once known solely for its plastic water storage tanks—into a multi-segment infrastructure brand, with plans to enter the pipes, water recycling, and electrical categories.

  • The company aims to capture 5% of the Indian pipe market within seven years, establishing a strong presence in a segment 12 times larger than tanks.

Strategic Expansion Beyond Tanks

Welspun is aggressively repositioning Sintex as a comprehensive water solutions brand, expanding beyond tanks into transportation (pipes) and treatment (recycling).

  • The group is also working on electrical boxes and plans to enter cable wires.
  • These expansions are supported by investments in capacity, technology, and talent acquisition, said Yashovardhan Agarwal, MD, Welspun BAPL & Director, Sintex.

Rapid Rollout in Pipes and Recycling Segments

Sintex has begun prototyping pipes and expects nationwide availability within a year, indicating a fast-tracked market entry.

  • Water recycling will be a core focus, including water reclamation and harvesting solutions.
  • This diversification is designed to align Sintex with India’s infrastructure needs, especially in Tier II & III cities.

Manufacturing Scale-Up and Facility Realignment

To support its diversification, Welspun has invested ₹2,400 crore, with ₹300–₹350 crore already deployed, and is expanding its manufacturing base from five to eight locations.

  • Recent developments include acquisition of Weetek Plastics in Raipur, new tank facility in Sonipat, and a large pipe plant in Bhopal.
  • Given high freight costs in the tank business, the group is realigning production closer to demand centers.

Market Position and Future Roadmap

Currently, Sintex commands a 10% share in the ₹6,000 crore water tank market, especially in the premium category with 12% growth.

  • The company plans to make products more affordable to reach economically weaker segments, extending its reach across rural and semi-urban areas.
  • Sintex’s brand visibility in Tier III cities is seen as a strategic edge for deeper market penetration.

Strengthening the Electrical and Interior Product Line

In addition to water infrastructure, Sintex is scaling its electrical box (EB) portfolio, which is currently its fastest-growing segment.

  • Efforts are focused on both expanding market reach and improving backend operational performance.
  • Sintex also deals in UPVC doors and decorative panels, supported by a network of over 900 distributors nationwide.
