Developer Options Warning: The Hidden Setting That Can Break Your Fold 7 Display

A Developer Options setting causes display issues, but Samsung offers a simple solution

Galaxy Z Fold 7 Users Report Strange Screen Glitch

Just weeks after launching the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Samsung has confirmed a screen bug affecting a portion of users. The issue causes the display to turn completely black or white when the phone is unfolded. In many cases, the lock screen becomes unresponsive, making it difficult or impossible to unlock the device.

What’s Causing the Black or White Screen Bug?

The problem stems from an advanced setting buried in Developer Options—specifically the “minimum width” parameter.

  • This setting controls how content scales on the screen.
  • If set to an unsupported value, the phone may fail to render the display correctly upon unfolding.
  • As a result, users encounter a blank screen or a screen that won’t respond to touch.

Samsung’s community moderator confirmed this root cause and urged users to avoid changing Developer Options unless they fully understand the impact.

How to Fix the Black or White Screen Issue

If you’re facing this problem, Samsung recommends a quick reset of your screen layout settings. Here’s what to do:

  1. Press the Power Button
    • This wakes the screen, which may allow the lock screen to display normally.
  2. Unlock the Phone While It’s Open
    • Ensure the device is in its unfolded state and unlocked.
  3. Go to Screen Layout Settings
    • Open Settings
    • Navigate to Display
    • Tap on Screen layout and size
  4. Adjust the Screen Size Temporarily
    • If your current setting is “+”, switch it to “-”, and vice versa.
    • After the layout resets, you can set it back to your preferred option.

This adjustment helps the system reset screen scaling and usually resolves the display malfunction.

Avoid Changing Developer Options Unnecessarily

Samsung strongly advises users to leave Developer Options alone, especially settings like minimum width, unless they are developers or understand the risks.

  • Incorrect changes can interfere with normal phone behavior.
  • It may also void warranties or complicate support interactions.

If the screen issue persists after trying the fix, users should contact Samsung support for assistance.
