iPhone 17 Air to Feature 120Hz Display Without Full ProMotion Support

iPhone 17 Air May Get 120Hz Display—But Without ProMotion

Apple’s upcoming non-Pro models could gain smoother screens, minus adaptive refresh features

High refresh rate is coming, but not true ProMotion

While previous reports suggested that the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air would finally receive ProMotion displays, new leaks indicate a partial truth—they will get 120Hz refresh rates, but without ProMotion’s adaptive capabilities.

  • The update comes via Digital Chat Station (DCS) and Fixed Focus Digital, both of whom say Apple is planning a standard 120Hz display, not the adaptive ProMotion panel found on Pro models.
  • This would mark the first time non-Pro iPhones offer 120Hz, long a feature exclusive to the Pro line.

What’s the difference?

ProMotion is more than just 120Hz. While both display types can hit that high refresh rate for smooth scrolling and gaming, ProMotion dynamically adjusts refresh rates depending on what’s on screen:

  • It can drop down to 1Hz for static content, saving battery.
  • It enables features like Always-On Display on Pro iPhones.
  • The non-Pro 120Hz panels will lack these energy-saving and functional benefits.

This distinction could help Apple preserve clear differentiation between Pro and non-Pro models while satisfying user demand for smoother displays across the board.

Mixed signals from earlier leaks

Display analyst Ross Young, a usually reliable source, previously suggested ProMotion would expand across the lineup. However, his prediction may have stemmed from evidence of 120Hz panels, which do not necessarily confirm ProMotion tech.

  • DCS’s earlier leaks were vague but now seem to align with this more limited refresh upgrade.
  • The new information clarifies that Apple might only offer basic high refresh rates without variable support.

Strategic compromise from Apple

By adding 120Hz to base models but omitting ProMotion, Apple:

  • Improves user experience for gaming and fluid interactions
  • Avoids battery-life challenges on cheaper models
  • Maintains premium differentiation for Pro devices through features like Always-On Display and adaptive refresh

While not a full ProMotion experience, the addition of standard 120Hz displays to the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air represents a significant step forward in display technology for Apple’s mainstream models—just with a carefully calculated limit.
