iPhone 17 Charges 50% in 20 Minutes with Apple’s New USB-C Adapter

Standard iPhone 17 Hits 28W on USB-C and 29W on MagSafe, Narrowing the Gap with Pro Models

USB-C Charging Speeds: A Noticeable Bump from iPhone 16

The iPhone 17 brings faster wired charging compared to its predecessor, according to new tests by ChargerLAB. Using a variety of Apple’s official USB-C power adapters (from 18W up to 140W), the regular iPhone 17 achieved peak charging speeds of 27–28W, up from the 23W peak on the iPhone 16.

Peak speeds were observed with adapters including:

  • 29W USB-C Power Adapter
  • 30W USB-C Power Adapter
  • 35W Dual USB-C Port Power Adapters (standard and compact)
  • 40W Dynamic Power Adapter (with 60W Max)
  • 61W, 67W, 70W, 96W, and 140W USB-C Power Adapters

This means any mid-to-high wattage Apple charger can deliver near-peak speeds on the iPhone 17, making it less about the adapter size and more about the device’s power management.

Comparison: iPhone 17 vs. iPhone 17 Pro

While the iPhone 17 Pro models can briefly reach 36W peak charging, Apple says both the standard and Pro iPhone 17 models can charge up to 50% in 20 minutes using a compatible USB-C charger.

For perspective:

  • iPhone 16 series: 50% charge in ~30 minutes
  • iPhone 17 series: 50% charge in ~20 minutes

That’s a 10-minute improvement, which may not sound dramatic but is significant for heavy users who rely on quick top-ups.

MagSafe Charging: Another Boost

ChargerLAB also tested Apple’s latest MagSafe Charger, and results show the iPhone 17 peaks at 29W for wireless charging. Sustained charging is capped at 25W, representing a notable improvement over the 15W sustained speeds of the iPhone 16.

  • Peak MagSafe: 29W
  • Sustained MagSafe: 25W
  • iPhone 16 MagSafe: 15W sustained

This gives the iPhone 17 a faster and more practical wireless charging experience, closing the gap with wired charging speeds.

Apple’s New 40W Dynamic Power Adapter

Apple is also promoting its 40W Dynamic Power Adapter (60W Max) as the go-to charger for the iPhone 17 series. Available in regions like the U.S., Canada, China, Japan, Mexico, Taiwan, and the Philippines, it supports fast charging across multiple Apple devices.

Pro Tip: A capable USB-C cable is required for maximum charging speeds. While cheap or generic cables may not support full power delivery, the included iPhone cable is sufficient for fast charging.

Why It Matters

The iPhone 17’s improved charging speeds—both wired and wireless—represent Apple’s push toward more competitive battery performance without changing its battery health philosophy.

  • Faster top-ups = more convenience for power users.
  • Wireless MagSafe is now a viable alternative to wired charging.
  • Apple continues to standardize USB-C charging across its ecosystem.
