From subtle grays to vibrant orange, Apple revamps its color palette for the iPhone 17, 17 Air, and 17 Pro models
A Fresh Coat of Paint for Apple’s Flagship Phones
A newly surfaced leak—allegedly based on internal Apple documentation referencing Pantone color codes—has revealed the full color lineup for the upcoming iPhone 17 series. With changes across the board, Apple seems poised to offer a more refined, expressive, and strategically segmented color strategy for the base, Air, and Pro models.
iPhone 17: Youthful Yet Refined
The standard iPhone 17 will reportedly drop the pastel palette of the iPhone 16 in favor of more defined, Pantone-rooted hues. The inclusion of Steel Gray introduces a cooler, more professional shade, offering a fresh alternative to black.
Expected Colors for iPhone 17:
- Black
- White (unchanged from iPhone 16)
- Steel Gray (Pantone 18-4005 TPG)
- Green (Pantone 2282 U)
- Purple (Pantone 530 U)
- Light Blue (Pantone 658 U)
These shades mark a notable departure from the pinks and pastels of last year, favoring greater visual clarity and contrast.

iPhone 17 Air: Lightweight Design, Lighter Aesthetic
The iPhone 17 Air, Apple’s rumored ultra-thin model, will come in just four colors, with an emphasis on brightness and lightness. According to reports, this visual identity aligns with the Air’s featherweight physical feel.
Expected Colors for iPhone 17 Air:
- Black
- White (brighter than iPhone 16’s white)
- Light Blue (Pantone 657 U) — inspired by MacBook Air Sky Blue
- Light Gold (Pantone 11-0604 TPG “Gardenia”)
These subtle, airy tones position the 17 Air as elegant and minimalist, a fitting match for Apple’s thinnest design ever.
iPhone 17 Pro & Pro Max: Pro Looks With Bold Accents
Apple isn’t holding back with the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. In addition to the classic grayscale trio, the company is introducing two vivid new tones: a deep Mood Indigo blue and a standout Papaya orange.
Expected Colors for iPhone 17 Pro / Pro Max:
- Black
- White
- Gray (akin to natural titanium)
- Dark Blue (Pantone 19-4025 TPG “Mood Indigo”)
- Orange (Pantone 1501243 TCX “Papaya”)
While the iPhone 16 Pro line uses titanium, the iPhone 17 Pro is rumored to switch to aluminum, which could subtly alter the appearance of these familiar tones. The introduction of bolder hues like orange signals a shift toward more expressive luxury in the Pro segment.
