Z Fold 7 Unfolding Explained: Adhesive, Not Hardware, Behind the Quirk

Samsung insider reveals display adhesive—not the hinge—is why some units don’t unfold completely at first

Galaxy Z Fold 7 Users, Don’t Worry About That Hinge

Some early users of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 noticed that their devices didn’t unfold fully flat out of the box, raising concerns about possible hinge defects. However, according to insider sources, there’s no hardware problem—just a little-known aspect of foldable design at play.

The Adhesive Is the Real Culprit

Tipster Setsuna Digital shared on Weibo that the cause of the “flat unfolding issue” isn’t the hinge—it’s the adhesive layer applied to the main display panel.

Here’s what’s happening:

  • The phone’s screen adhesive is designed to flex and stretch with regular use.
  • When a device remains folded for an extended time (such as during packaging or shipping), the adhesive may retain a slightly curved form.
  • As a result, the screen may not initially unfold completely flat.

Over time, the adhesive “recovers” and gradually stretches to its intended flat state with normal use.

No Need for Concern or Force

While it’s tempting to press the display flat manually, experts do not recommend it. The device is engineered to gradually adapt:

  • The hinge allows for a range of 178.5 to 181.5 degrees.
  • Applying gentle unfolding through regular use helps the adhesive naturally loosen and level out.

Store demo units often spark concerns because they’re usually stored in boxes or displayed unopened, so the adhesive hasn’t had time to flex through normal use.

Why This Matters

Samsung’s foldables rely on precise manufacturing techniques, and the use of adhesive is a necessary design element that ensures long-term screen durability.

But this also means:

  • Initial stiffness or incomplete unfolding is not a defect
  • The phone will self-correct through repeated use
  • Users can confidently buy the Z Fold 7 without hinge concerns

What Samsung Users Should Know

If your new Galaxy Z Fold 7 doesn’t lay perfectly flat:

  • Don’t worry—it’s normal
  • Use the phone regularly and allow the adhesive to adjust
  • Avoid applying force to flatten it manually

This subtle behavior is part of the foldable experience and not a cause for alarm.
