Bengaluru Weather Update: Expect More Rains and Thunderstorms, Says IMD

Bengaluru likely to see more summer rains this year, says IMD

Bengaluru is anticipated to witness increased summer showers this year, driven by a surge in convectional rainfall, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

  • This rise is due to the lifting of warm, moist air, which cools and leads to cloud formation and precipitation.

As the city edges closer to peak summer, Bengaluru is projected to experience more rain than previous years, IMD officials confirmed.

  • Weather experts attribute this to enhanced convection, marking a shift from the hotter, drier patterns observed in earlier summers.

According to a report by Deccan Herald, Bengaluru is set for high rainfall throughout this summer.

  • This is in stark contrast to last year’s trend, when the city endured prolonged dry spells and intense heat.

Surge in pre-monsoon rains in Karnataka

Unlike last year, Karnataka is now observing a noticeable increase in pre-monsoon rains, officials stated.

  • N Puviarasan, Head of the Bengaluru Met Centre, confirmed that this phenomenon is behind the city’s higher rainfall this summer.

The IMD has predicted light to moderate thundershowers, accompanied by gusty winds and lightning, across Bengaluru from Tuesday to Friday.

  • Daytime temperatures are expected to range between 34°C and 23°C over the next two days, providing some relief from peak summer heat.

Advisory issued for Bengaluru residents

Authorities have released an advisory, urging people to prepare for extreme weather conditions.

  • Residents are encouraged to monitor weather updates, stay indoors during heavy rains, and secure doors and windows.

The IMD has specifically warned against taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms.

  • Citizens are also advised to move to safer locations when necessary, as tree uprooting is a recurring issue during strong showers in Bengaluru.

Several instances of fatal accidents have been linked to falling trees, making it crucial for residents to exercise caution during storms.

  • The city’s civic authorities are also on alert to respond to emergencies triggered by adverse weather.

Rising temperatures impact Karnataka’s agriculture

The IMD has further cautioned that above-normal temperatures in parts of north interior Karnataka may cause minor damage to banana and papaya plantations.

  • Strong winds could also pose a threat to horticulture and standing crops, putting pressure on farmers during this critical season.

Farmers are advised to reinforce agricultural structures and prepare contingency plans to minimize losses from sudden storms.

  • Local officials are working on providing early warnings to farming communities to mitigate weather-related damage.
