Blistering Heatwave to Grip Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan; Thunderstorms Predicted Elsewhere

IMD warns blistering heatwave in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, cloudy skies in Delhi-NCR

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for blistering heatwaves across Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan until April 30.

  • Meanwhile, Delhi-NCR will experience cloudy skies, providing temporary relief from the extreme heat.

The IMD has also predicted thunderstorms in several states, including Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha, over the coming days.

  • Citizens in these areas are advised to prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions.

IMD forecast for Delhi NCR

Following a day when heatwave conditions pushed temperatures to 43°C in isolated areas, Delhi is set for a brief respite with cloudy skies on Sunday.

  • The IMD forecasts a minor drop in mercury, though temperatures will still remain relatively high.

The Met Department expects a partly cloudy sky, with surface winds ranging between 10-20 km/h, gusting up to 30 km/h.

  • The maximum temperature will stay between 40°C and 42°C, still 1-3°C above normal levels.

In the morning, predominant surface winds are expected, with speeds gradually increasing in the afternoon.

  • By Monday, clearer skies and occasional surface winds will dominate, keeping temperatures steady at 40-42°C.

IMD issues heatwave alert

The IMD has extended its heatwave alerts for Punjab and Haryana until May 1, warning of persistent hot conditions.

  • Parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are likely to endure the blistering heat until May 2.

Additionally, Jammu is forecasted to experience hotter days between April 27 and 28, as temperatures continue to climb.

  • People are urged to minimize outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.

The IMD also warns of hot and humid weather in Bihar, Jharkhand, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat until May 1.

  • This combination of heat and humidity can increase health risks, such as heat exhaustion.

IMD prediction for thunderstorms

The IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across Northeast India over the next six days.

  • A thundersquall with wind speeds between 50-60 km/h is expected in Assam and Meghalaya on Sunday.

Scattered to fairly widespread rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds, is forecasted for Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh until April 30.

  • These regions should remain alert for sudden weather shifts and localized flooding.

The IMD has also issued warnings for thundersqualls across West Bengal, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Odisha, and Jharkhand through the end of April.

  • Travelers and farmers in these states should monitor weather updates closely.

Moreover, light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and strong winds is likely over Karnataka, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Rayalaseema, Kerala, Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal for the next six days.

  • Authorities have advised necessary precautions to prevent damage from strong winds.

Isolated heavy rainfall is forecasted over Kerala and Mahe on April 29 and 30, increasing the risk of waterlogging in vulnerable areas.

  • Emergency services are on standby to respond to possible flooding incidents.
