A Faster, Safer Route Between Two Mega Cities
The Pune–Mumbai commute is set for a transformative upgrade. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has approved the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a new eight-lane expressway that promises to cut travel time to just 90 minutes under normal traffic conditions.

Why a New Expressway Is Needed
Rising vehicular traffic on the current Mumbai–Pune Expressway has led to chronic congestion, delays, and safety hazards.
- Traffic volume has significantly exceeded the expressway’s original design capacity
- Frequent bottlenecks and accident-prone zones have become a daily issue
- According to NHAI Pune Project Director Sanjay Kadam, the new expressway is a much-needed long-term mobility solution
Strategic Route and Key Integrations
The proposed expressway will enhance connectivity across western Maharashtra and plug directly into key infrastructure nodes:
- Starts near Atal Setu (Mumbai Trans Harbour Link)
- Connects to Navi Mumbai International Airport and JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust)
- Passes through the Sahyadri hills using tunnels and elevated bridges for uninterrupted travel
- Terminates at Shivare in Bhor taluka (Pune district)
- Links directly with the upcoming Pune Ring Road, allowing southbound vehicles to bypass the city
A Backbone for Maharashtra’s Economic Corridors
The expressway is envisioned as more than just a road—it’s a logistics and economic enabler.
- Will serve as a fast freight corridor connecting Mumbai’s port and airport infrastructure to industrial clusters in Pune, Satara, Kolhapur, and beyond
- Seamless integration with the Pune Ring Road will enhance access to Bengaluru Highway (NH-48)
- Boosts regional trade, reduces fuel costs, and improves supply chain efficiency
Project Timelines and Next Steps
With the DPR now approved, the project awaits final procedural clearances, including environmental and land acquisition approvals.
