23.3-km Corridor Featuring 23 Stations Nears Completion as Maharashtra Government Shifts Execution to Mahametro
Mahametro Takes Charge of Metro Expansion
In a significant move, the Maharashtra state government has handed over the reins of the Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar Metro line expansion to Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (Mahametro). This marks the completion of PMRDA’s role, which was instrumental in launching the project.
- The 23.3-km metro corridor comprises 23 stations and will now be fully managed by Mahametro.
- The transition comes as the project enters its final phase, with over 90% of the construction completed.
According to PMRDA Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase, this move is in line with the state’s strategy to centralize metro project execution under specialized agencies.
Metro Corridor Designed to Boost City Connectivity
The metro line is being developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with Tata-Siemens as the private partner.
- It aims to connect Hinjawadi’s IT hub with the central business district of Shivajinagar.
- Each train is designed to accommodate around 1,000 passengers, providing a much-needed transit option for Pune’s growing commuter population.
The metro will operate end-to-end in a single phase, from Maan-Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar, upon its expected March 2026 completion.
Trial Run and Project Milestones
The project achieved a major milestone in July 2025, when the first trial run was successfully conducted between Maan Depot and PMR-4 station.
- This trial validated core operational systems and marked readiness for final-stage testing and integration.
- The full commissioning is planned without any segmented opening, unlike other metro corridors that launch in phases.

End of PMRDA’s Metro Role in Pune
With this shift, PMRDA’s involvement will conclude upon completion of this corridor. All future metro expansions in Pune and other cities in Maharashtra will be overseen by Mahametro, while MMRDA will continue to manage projects in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
This restructuring is intended to bring efficiency, specialization, and accountability to metro development across the state.
