A landmark win for AST in the satellite-to-cell race
AST SpaceMobile has signed a major deal with Verizon to deliver space-based cellular broadband across the U.S., marking a turning point in its efforts to rival SpaceX’s Starlink in the emerging satellite-to-smartphone market.
Under the new agreement, Verizon will integrate AST’s low-Earth orbit satellite network with its existing infrastructure, leveraging the 850 MHz spectrum to extend mobile coverage to rural and remote areas underserved by terrestrial towers.
The terms of the deal remain undisclosed, but it builds upon Verizon’s previous $100 million commitment to support AST’s network rollout.
With this move, Verizon becomes AST’s second major carrier partner, after Vodafone, which signed a 10-year agreement with the company earlier.
Satellite-to-phone tech, no special hardware required
AST’s value proposition is simple but revolutionary: connect standard, unmodified smartphones directly to satellites for 4G and 5G coverage — no special equipment needed.
So far, AST has:
- Deployed its first five BlueBird satellites (Block 1), delivering intermittent coverage in the U.S.
- Successfully demonstrated voice and video calls via satellite
- Validated 4G and 5G broadband links directly to commercial smartphones
The next phase, Block 2, includes 45–60 satellites, which the company aims to launch by 2026 to provide broader and more reliable coverage.
Rising competition with SpaceX and T-Mobile
AST’s Verizon partnership comes as SpaceX and T-Mobile accelerate their own direct-to-cell service through Starlink.
SpaceX recently strengthened its position by:
- Launching its first text-only direct-to-cell satellites
- Announcing plans for voice, data, and IoT services in 2025
- Acquiring $17 billion worth of spectrum from EchoStar to support satellite-cell operations
That makes AST’s agreement with Verizon crucial for market positioning, as telecoms increasingly look to space-based solutions to fill coverage gaps.
Why Verizon is betting on satellites
For Verizon, the partnership offers:
- Expanded national coverage in difficult terrain
- A way to compete directly with T-Mobile and Starlink’s satellite ambitions
- Strategic alignment with AST’s goal of fully interoperable mobile broadband, not just emergency texting
The collaboration promises “nationwide service where coverage doesn’t exist today,” according to AST.
With rising demand for always-on connectivity, and with natural disasters, rural deployment challenges, and infrastructure limitations in mind, satellite-to-cell technology is now seen as essential to the future of mobile networks.
Scaling remains the key challenge
Though AST has proven its core technology, its biggest hurdle is scaling operations to support millions of users simultaneously. That means:
- Accelerating satellite production
- Ensuring cost-effective launches
- Working through regulatory and spectrum licensing in multiple countries
Still, with major carriers like Verizon and Vodafone backing its roadmap, AST is better positioned than most new entrants to compete at scale.
