UEFA said it is scrapping the away goals rules from their club competitions, meaning two-legged ties will go to extra time if the scores are level after both legs.
UEFA said Thursday it was abandoning the away goals rule for all of its club competitions from next season. Goal Rule Introduced in 1965, Goal Rule allowed two teams to match the number of goals they scored on aggregate over two games to determine the winner of the two-legged knockout tie.
From the 2021-2022 season, if both teams score the same amount of goals over the two legs, an extra-time tie will be decided by the result of two 15-minute periods following the second leg.
⚽ The away goals rule will be removed from all UEFA club competitions from the 2021/22 season.
Ties in which the two teams score the same number of goals over the two legs will now have two 15-minute periods of extra time, and, if required, penalty kicks.#UCL #UWCL #UEL #UYL

Statistics since the mid-1970s show a clear trend of continuous reduction in the gap between the number of home-away wins (from 61%-19% to 47%-30%) and the average number of goals per match scored at home-away (from 2.02-0.95 to 1.58-1.15) in men’s competitions.

In the chance that the teams manage the same number of goals or fail to score at all in extra time, there will then be a penalty shootout.
