With a $140M valuation and expanding reach into Tier 2 and 3 cities, the tech-enabled bus platform aims to redefine long-distance road travel for millions of Indians.
Solving India’s Intercity Transit Puzzle
India’s booming intercity travel is creating a major gap in affordable, reliable, and safe road transport. While railways are at capacity and airlines remain expensive, roadways — supercharged by a 60% expansion in national highways — have become the most viable option for millions.
That’s where IntrCity SmartBus is gaining ground.
The Noida-based startup has raised $30 million in Series D funding led by A91 Partners, valuing the company at $140 million post-money. The capital will support network expansion and upgrades to its fleet management and customer experience tech.
From RailYatri to Road Disruptor
Launched in 2019 by the team behind RailYatri, IntrCity SmartBus initially offered train ticketing before recognizing the unmet potential in bus-based travel.
“RailYatri gave us rich insights into India’s travel behavior,” said Kapil Raizada, co-founder and president. “We saw that roads would be the future of mass intercity mobility.”
Today, 90% of the company’s revenue comes from its SmartBus operations. It runs 600+ daily trips and transports 20,000–25,000 passengers daily — nearly 700,000 riders per month.
Tech-Enabled Buses, Not Just Booking Apps
Unlike traditional bus services, IntrCity uses a tech-first, asset-light model. It partners with local bus operators, fitting their vehicles with proprietary hardware that enables:
- Real-time GPS tracking
- Cloud-connected monitoring systems
- In-bus captains for assistance
- CCTV, sound, and climate control tracking
Every bus trip is orchestrated through centralized route planning, offering better control over service quality and frequency. Most buses include onboard restrooms and operate overnight routes, supporting India’s vast non-discretionary travel market: students, sales professionals, small business owners, and government officials.
Built for Bharat, Not Just Metro Riders
IntrCity SmartBus is scaling through a hub-and-spoke model, now active in 15 states and 13–14 key economic zones, spanning from Jammu to Karnataka.
While many mobility startups chase metro markets, IntrCity is doubling down on smaller towns, where migratory workforces and educational travelers drive consistent demand.
Numbers that Matter
- Revenue (FY 2024): ₹5 billion (~$57M), up 67% YoY
- Projected FY 2025 revenue: ₹7 billion (~$79M)
- EBITDA-positive for two years
- Average route distance: 311 miles
- 95% of trips are overnight
“We’re not just digitizing ticketing,” said CEO Manish Rathi. “We’re building an operating system for long-haul road travel.”
Safety and Comfort as Differentiators
In a country where bus travel is seen as inferior to trains or flights, IntrCity is on a mission to flip that perception. The company has invested in:
- Air-conditioned boarding lounges
- Trained onboard crew
- Vehicle condition monitoring
- Route-level seat layout customization
It also crunches real-time data to adjust offerings, including hybrid buses that blend sleeper and seater formats.
Eyes on the Road, Not the Competition
While global players like FlixBus and Indian startups such as Zingbus, Fresh Bus, and LeafyBus join the fray, IntrCity’s leadership believes that execution, not competition, is the deciding factor.
“In India, road travel throws up unexpected challenges every day,” said Rathi. “Operational excellence trumps network size.”
What’s Next for IntrCity
With fresh funding, IntrCity plans to:
- Expand to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities
- Enhance its fleet technology
- Improve safety, reliability, and booking UX
- Move closer to full profitability this fiscal year
In a market with 223 million+ annual intercity journeys, IntrCity is betting that modernized, tech-enabled road transport will be the bridge between India’s growing middle class and its geographically dispersed opportunities.
IntrCity SmartBus raised $30M at a $140M valuation to expand its tech-powered intercity bus network across India. With 600+ daily trips, real-time tracking, and cloud-connected buses, it aims to modernize long-haul travel and compete with rail by focusing on comfort, safety, and deep operational control.
