‘Apple Studio Display’ with 7K resolution is reportedly in development

A new Apple Studio Display with a 7K resolution is in the works, according to 9to5Mac’s Filipe Espósito, who cites sources familiar with the matter. Apple is also expected to include a silicon chip in the display.

According to the report, it is unclear whether the display will be an upgrade to the Pro Display XDR or a standalone display. There are still a few details unknown, such as the size of the display and when it will be released.

Mark Gurman at Bloomberg reported first that Apple was working on a new external display, but he said it would be less bright and have a lower contrast ratio. It sounds like the new 7K display will be above the Pro Display XDR in the lineup, so it is possible that Apple intends to offer displays at multiple price points, as it did with the Cinema Display lineup in the 2000s.

In December 2019, Apple released the Pro Display XDR for $4,999, with an optional $999 stand. Display features include a 6K resolution, peak brightness of 1,600 nits for HDR content, 10-bit depth for 1.073 billion colors, and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio.
