Apple Watch Series 7 Won’t Get A Blood Glucose, Temperature Sensor: Report

Apple Watch Series 7 rumors have been gaining wind thick and fast over the past couple of months and the one feature addition that we’ve seen mention of time and again is a blood glucose sensor. Sadly, it now seems unlikely that blood glucose monitoring is coming to the smartwatch anytime soon and there’s good reason to it.

As per a report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and Debby Wu, Apple may be working towards getting a blood glucose sensor into an Apple Watch, it won’t be happening anytime soon. In fact, the report straight out states that the blood-sugar sensor is “unlikely to be ready for commercial launch for several more years.”

The report claims that the Series 7 could instead get improvements elsewhere, like a faster processor, improved wireless connectivity, and a better display. Going into specifics, the screen is expected to have visibly thinner bezels and Apple’s supposedly made a breakthrough with a new lamination technique that “brings the display closer to the front cover.” It’s also supposedly going to feature the same ultrawideband capabilities as AirTags, although that may not be an entirely new feature since the Series 6 also had Apple U1 ultra wideband chip.

Besides blood glucose monitoring, another feature that’s apparently been pushed back is temperature monitoring. Bloomberg claims that Apple had aimed to include body temperature sensors in the Series 7, but that will now likely show up in 2022 instead.

Apple is also reportedly working on an “extreme sports” model of the Apple Watch, believed to have a launch date in 2022. A rugged version of the Apple Watch — being dubbed as the Apple Watch Explorer Edition — has been in development for and while now apparently and was also expected to release as early as this year, but it is now more likely to launch in 2022.

The rugged watch will go up against the likes of a Casio G-Shock or a handful of other specialised offerings from Garmin and Polar, which are preferred by endurance athletes. That said, a primary feature on most endurance-focussed wearable also get a chuckier battery and adding that to Apple Watch may result in a slightly larger chassis.
