Apple’s Next Move: A Secure Smart Home Camera and Enhanced HomePod Hub

Apple Reportedly Planning to Launch Smart Home Camera Alongside HomePod With Display

Apple’s entry into the smart home market is poised to expand significantly, with fresh reports suggesting the company is developing its own HomeKit-enabled wireless smart home camera. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reiterated his prediction that Apple plans to release this camera in 2026, potentially in tandem with a new HomePod featuring a built-in display.

Integration With the HomePod Display

Kuo states that the rumored smart home camera will integrate seamlessly with the upcoming HomePod, which is said to feature a 6-7 inch display, an A18 chip, and support for Apple Intelligence. The camera is expected to serve as an optional accessory that complements the HomePod, creating a tightly integrated ecosystem for home security.

This marks a significant move for Apple as it seeks to deliver a security solution fully designed and managed in-house, leveraging its expertise in hardware, software, and privacy.

Enhanced Privacy and Security

Apple’s camera will likely prioritize privacy and security, distinguishing itself from competitors in the smart home camera market. Apple already offers HomeKit Secure Video, which enables encrypted streaming and storage of video footage via iCloud. Cameras compatible with this service, such as the Logitech Circle View and the Eve Cam, can be easily controlled through the Home app on Apple devices.

An Apple-designed camera could further extend these privacy measures, possibly introducing advanced features not found in third-party HomeKit Secure Video products. However, details on these potential enhancements are currently unknown.

Speculation About the HomePod Hub

The timing of this rumored launch aligns with Kuo’s expectations for the mass production of the HomePod with a display to begin in the second half of 2025. This timeline suggests that the camera and HomePod may debut together in 2026.

Interestingly, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has reported on a similar device, a smart home hub with a six-inch display capable of being wall-mounted or paired with a HomePod-like speaker base. While the rumored features align with Kuo’s predictions, Gurman suggests a slightly earlier launch, potentially in March 2025. This discrepancy raises questions about whether the devices are identical or represent distinct products within Apple’s smart home lineup.
