Geekbench Confirms Double-Digit Gains for AMD’s Next-Gen Threadripper

Geekbench and PassMark scores confirm double-digit uplift over 7980X as launch nears

Another Benchmark, Another Win for the 9980X

AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 9980X continues to make waves ahead of its official launch. A new Geekbench listing, discovered by Benchleaks, further confirms the impressive performance leap over the previous-gen 7980X.

  • Single-core score: 3,259 (up from 2,882 on 7980X)
  • Multi-core score: 28,666 (compared to 24,790)
  • Test rig: Asus Pro WS TRX50-Sage WiFi motherboard with 128 GB RAM

This places the 9980X at an estimated 10–12% uplift in single-core and 13–15% in multi-core performance—an encouraging sign for content creators, engineers, and power users.

Following Up on PassMark Dominance

This Geekbench appearance comes shortly after the 9980X topped PassMark charts, where it achieved a 7.7% performance increase over its predecessor. While Geekbench may not perfectly reflect real-world performance, the consistency across both platforms suggests a tangible improvement.

  • PassMark position: #1 in CPU ranking (as of July 2025)
  • Compared to: Threadripper 7980X, which was already a high-end performer

Technical Specs: Zen 5 Firepower

The Threadripper 9980X is built on AMD’s Zen 5 architecture and brings serious power to the workstation market.

  • Cores/Threads: 64 cores and 128 threads
  • Clock speed: Boosts up to 5.4 GHz
  • Cache: 256 MB of L3 cache
  • TDP: 350W
  • Platform: Supports latest AMD Ryzen tech including EXPO memory profiles

It’s engineered for massive workloads—ideal for 3D rendering, simulation, and complex compilation tasks.

Launch Timeline: What We Know So Far

AMD hasn’t confirmed the consumer release date for the 9000X series, but its Threadripper 9000WX lineup will be available starting July 23. These high-end CPUs will first be distributed through regional integrators and OEM partners.

With retail listings and benchmark leaks surfacing, a broader availability announcement for the 9980X is likely imminent.
