Google Images: History and How to Perform Image Searches on Various Devices

Google Images: History and How to Search for Pictures or Perform a Reverse Image Search on iPhone, Android, or Desktop

Google Images was launched in response to a high demand for pictures of Jennifer Lopez in her iconic green Versace dress from the 2000 Grammy Awards. This innovative feature allows users to search for images using keywords or perform reverse image searches to find information about specific photos.

History of Google Images

Google Images was created after Jennifer Lopez wore a daring green Versace dress to the 2000 Grammy Awards, leading to a spike in searches for images of her in the dress. Google co-founder Larry Page and Sergey Brin saw this as an opportunity to innovate and introduced Google Images to cater to this user demand.

How to Use Google Images

Google Images lets you search for pictures by typing relevant keywords. Here’s how to access Google Images:

  1. Visit and select “Images” in the upper-right corner.
  2. Visit for direct access.
  3. Input search terms into the default Google search and select “Images” on the results page.

Once you submit a search, Google provides a gallery of thumbnail images that match your keywords, linked to their respective websites.

Reverse image search allows you to search using an image instead of text. This can help you find the source of an image, similar images, or more information about a photo. Here’s how to perform a reverse image search on different devices:

On iPhone or Android

Using an Image from Your Files:

  1. Open the Google app on your device.
  2. Tap the camera icon in the search bar. Grant permission to access your camera and image gallery if prompted.
  3. Either take a picture using the shutter button or select an image from your gallery.
  4. Google will display results related to the image.

Using an Image from the Search Results:

  1. Open the Google app or in the Chrome app.
  2. Describe the image you want to search for and tap the “Images” tab.
  3. Select an image from the search results and tap the camera icon in the bottom left corner.
  4. Google will show related images and search terms.

On a Computer

Using an Image from Your Files:

  1. Open in a web browser.
  2. Click the camera icon.
  3. Drag and drop your image or upload it from your computer.
  4. Google will display similar images or information about the image.

Using an Image from the Internet:

  1. Right-click on the image and select “Copy image address.”
  2. Open and click the camera icon.
  3. Paste the image URL into the “Paste image link” text box.
  4. Click “Search” to see results related to the image.

Additional Google Photo Tools

  • Google Photos: A photo-sharing and storage service with search features similar to Google Drive.
  • Google Lens: An image recognition technology that identifies real-world objects and provides information about them.

Google Images, along with other tools like Google Photos and Google Lens, showcases Google’s commitment to innovation and user-friendly features. Whether you’re searching for images using text or performing a reverse image search, Google provides comprehensive solutions to meet your needs.
