Real-World Benchmarks Reveal Weak Spots in Kioxia BG6 SSD

Kioxia’s BG6 512 GB SSD targets budget users with PCIe Gen 4 support, but benchmark results show it falls short of its advertised speeds.

The Kioxia BG6 KBG6AZNV512G is a 512 GB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD, unveiled in May 2023 as part of the BG6 series. While a smaller M.2 2230 variant is also available, this 2280 model offers PCIe 4.0 x4 interface speeds at a lower price, making it an appealing option for thin laptops and budget PC builds.

The drive is rated for 4.8 GB/s sequential reads and 4.0 GB/s writes by Kioxia. However, real-world benchmarks tell a different story.


Claimed vs. Actual Performance

In Kioxia’s specs, the drive looks competitive for entry-level PCIe 4.0:

  • Advertised Sequential Read: 4.8 GB/s
  • Advertised Sequential Write: 4.0 GB/s
  • Power Consumption: ~4.7 W under load

But in independent testing (AS SSD & DiskSpd), the performance is more modest:

The Kioxia BG6 512 GB is best suited for:

  • Thin-and-light laptops needing a budget SSD upgrade
  • Secondary storage for large file storage or OS installs

It’s not ideal for performance-critical tasks like 4K video editing, large-scale gaming, or multi-threaded disk operations, especially given the subpar 4K and queue-depth performance.
