Samsung and Telstra Launch Satellite Messaging with Galaxy S25 and SpaceX

Telstra launches SpaceX-backed messaging for remote connectivity via Galaxy S25 series

A First for Australia: Satellite Messaging on Galaxy S25

The Samsung Galaxy S25 series has officially become the first smartphone in Australia to support satellite-based SMS messaging through Telstra’s Direct to Cell service powered by SpaceX’s Starlink network.

  • Telstra, Australia’s largest telecom provider, announced that the Galaxy S25 is the first phone to offer this feature, delivering connectivity in areas without mobile coverage.
  • This service is part of a firmware update rolling out gradually to Galaxy S25 users on eligible Telstra mobile plans, expected to be completed within a month.

How It Works

The satellite messaging feature allows users to send and receive SMS messages when outside regular mobile coverage, using Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellite constellation.

  • The device will automatically switch to satellite mode when mobile networks are unavailable, enabling communication in rural, remote, and isolated areas.
  • Starlink’s reach includes mainland Australia and Tasmania, excluding Western Australia’s Radio Quiet Zone and remote offshore territories.

Key Limitations and Use Cases

While a breakthrough in connectivity, the service has some important limitations:

  • Satellite SMS cannot be used for emergency services, so users cannot contact 000 or other emergency responders via this method.
  • Message delivery times may vary based on satellite visibility and location conditions, as the system depends on line-of-sight to the sky.

Still, the feature is highly valuable for:

  • Rural residents
  • Bushwalkers and hikers
  • Farmers, explorers, and travelers in low-signal areas

Extensive Testing Before Launch

Telstra tested the service extensively in partnership with SpaceX, sending over 55,000 satellite text messages since April using the Galaxy S25.

  • A live trial with regional teams validated real-world performance, clearing the path for the commercial rollout.

Requirements and Setup

To use satellite messaging on the Galaxy S25 series:

  • Users must install the latest software update
  • Be subscribed to a Telstra Upfront Mobile or eligible Business plan
  • Be outdoors with a clear view of the sky to establish a satellite link

The system automatically detects lack of coverage and initiates Starlink satellite connectivity without user input.

Expansion to Other Devices Planned

Though currently exclusive to the Galaxy S25, Telstra confirms plans to extend satellite messaging to more Samsung and Android devices in Australia in the near future.

This launch represents a milestone in Australia’s mobile infrastructure, blending smartphone innovation with space-based networks to expand connectivity beyond conventional limits.
