Tesla Optimus Robot to Use Samsung’s Camera Modules for Vision

Tesla’s Optimus Robot to ‘See’ Through Samsung’s Vision Technology

A $16.6B Samsung-Tesla partnership brings next-gen camera systems to AI-powered humanoids.

Samsung and Tesla Strengthen AI Alliance

Tesla and Samsung have cemented a $16.6 billion semiconductor partnership, marking a significant expansion of their long-standing collaboration. A key highlight? Samsung Electro-Mechanics will provide advanced camera modules for Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus, empowering it with crucial vision and navigation capabilities.

Vision Technology for Physical AI

According to recent reports, Samsung Electro-Mechanics will supply image sensor modules that will allow the Optimus robot to “see” and understand its surroundings. These modules are central to:

  • Object recognition and environmental awareness
  • Stabilized motion and balance
  • Real-time visual feedback for autonomous actions

Interestingly, while Sony image sensors will be integrated into the modules, Samsung will contribute its lens systems and drive units, making this a highly specialized collaboration.

These vision systems are essential for physical AI — the combination of robotics and artificial intelligence in humanoid form.

A Rapidly Scaling Robot Ambition

Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently shared bold plans for Optimus:

  • Mass production to begin by late 2025
  • Aim to produce one million units annually within four years

Optimus represents Tesla’s ambition to redefine manufacturing, labor, and automation through humanoid robotics.

Samsung’s Role in the AI Supply Chain

Samsung’s contribution goes beyond just the camera modules:

  • The Optimus robot is also rumored to use 2nm AI chips, potentially manufactured by Samsung in the U.S.
  • This deepens Samsung’s role across Tesla’s AI, robotics, and energy segments

Samsung Electro-Mechanics also stated during its Q2 2025 earnings call that it plans to expand development for global humanoid robot clients, signaling its strategic bet on the robotics market.

“We aim to solidify our technological leadership in the new robot market,” the company declared.

The Bigger Picture

This partnership not only marks a pivotal moment for Tesla’s robotics vision but also reinforces Samsung Electronics’ emergence as a foundational player in next-gen AI, automotive, and robotics ecosystems.

As Tesla brings physical AI to life with Optimus, it will do so — quite literally — through Samsung’s eyes.
