The Invention of Wi-Fi: A Collaborative Breakthrough

While Victor “Vic” Hayes is often dubbed the “Father of Wi-Fi”, the development of Wi-Fi spans across continents, industries, and even centuries.

Hayes was chairman of the IEEE 802.11 Standards Working Group, which defined how wireless devices should communicate. His leadership in setting global standards was instrumental in shaping the Wi-Fi we use today—but it was just one piece of the puzzle.


Early Foundations: From Tesla to WWII

Several breakthroughs in frequency transmission laid the groundwork for wireless data.

  • Hedy Lamarr, an actress, and George Antheil, a composer, invented frequency-hopping spread spectrum during World War II. Their technology prevented radio signal jamming and eventually inspired modern wireless systems.
  • Guglielmo Marconi (1899) and Nikola Tesla were early experimenters in radio communication, laying theoretical groundwork for selective frequency reception.
  • In 1971, the University of Hawaii launched ALOHAnet, a pioneering wireless packet data network. It was the first system to use radio waves to connect multiple computers, a key Wi-Fi principle.

The 1990s: Turning Theory Into Tech

In the early 1990s, John O’Sullivan, an Australian engineer, patented a method to reduce interference in wireless data signals. This breakthrough made it possible to send large amounts of data wirelessly with minimal errors—a core component of Wi-Fi today.

By 2000, Wi-Fi was commercially viable. A company named Radiata introduced a chipset supporting 802.11a, capable of 54 Mbps data speeds. This set the stage for modern Wi-Fi standards like 802.11b/g/n/ac/ax, and now 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7).

Wi-Fi (short for Wireless Fidelity) is a wireless local area network (WLAN) technology. It lets devices connect to each other—and the internet—without physical cables.
