Apple said it has completely rebuilt the search technology behind Spotlight, Photos and Mail, addressing long-standing complaints from users who struggled to locate emails, photos and other content.
The company announced the changes during its WWDC 2026 keynote on Monday.
“We’ve all had that moment where you search for something you know is there, but it just won’t show up,” Stacey Ford, Apple’s vice president of OS Program Management, said during the presentation.
New search foundation
According to Apple, the overhaul affects:
- iOS.
- iPadOS.
- macOS.
At the center of the redesign is a new Search Index, which Apple described as a detailed catalog built by devices to better understand and organize content.
The company said the system is designed to improve how devices locate information across apps.
Reindexing old and new content
Ford said Apple has re-architected Search so that it reindexes both newly created material and older content already stored on devices.
That change is intended to improve search accuracy and ensure previously overlooked items can be found.
Mail gets new ranking system
Apple also announced a new ranking mechanism for the Mail app.
The company said the updated system should do a better job of surfacing the email users are looking for, regardless of when the message was received.
The improvements are aimed at addressing a common frustration among Apple users who have struggled to find messages and photos even when using exact search terms.
TL;DR:
Apple has rebuilt the search technology used by Mail, Photos and Spotlight. The new system reindexes old and new content and introduces a revised ranking system for email searches.
